A government educational institution with more than 2,800 students studying in 13 attractive buildings stands next to the main market in Attariya, Kailali. The school is spread over an area of 16,130.86 square meters. Outside the school wall, it is written, 'My Durga Lakshmi, My Pride'.

Durga Laxmi Model Secondary School is established as a small school in the far west. The physical infrastructure is also well-organized. There are enough teachers. This school has become the first choice of students. Durga Laxmi has gone through a long and struggling journey to achieve this height.

This school was started about 52 years ago by children spreading sacks brought from their homes and relying on a teacher in an open field. Despite being a district in the Terai, Attariya was very backward in terms of education at that time. The foundation of Durga Laxmi was laid due to the locals' feeling that if the school was established, the existing illiteracy and awareness level would further weaken. There is a record that this school was established on 4 Bhadra 030, on the occasion of Children's Day.

The founding principal of the school, Krishna Bhakta Paneru, has written about the early days in his souvenir, 'One day, my nephew Jay Prasad Pandey, who lives in Attariya, met the leaders of this place, Nar Bahadur Kadayat and Bhim Bahadur Kadayat. The discussion to establish the school started after all three of them requested me to help them by saying that a school was essential in Attariya.'

Paneru, who was living in Dadeldhura at the time, had just returned from India after completing his studies. After the suggestion to establish the school, the villagers formed a school management committee under the chairmanship of the local chief Chandrabhan Kadayat and started the process of establishing the school. During that time, the school was named 'Shri Durga Laxmi Lower Primary School'.

According to the founder, Principal Paneru, at that time, classes had to be conducted in open fields. Students would come carrying sacks from home, and they had to bring their own pencils and pens for writing. A total of 25 students were enrolled in the first year. They were placed in classes 1, 2 and 3 based on their learning level. But Paneru, who was also the principal, was forced to handle all three classes.

Despite limited resources, the key stakeholders did not let their commitment to education weaken. The school moved forward due to the activism and continuous efforts of the local community.

With the passage of time, Attariya Bazaar expanded. As the population increased, the awareness towards education also gradually deepened. With the same change, Durga Laxmi also expanded its form and standard. Classes were added, buildings were built, the number of teachers increased and the educational status of the school also rose.

This school, which started operating in 049 BS with class 6, participated in SLC for the first time in 052  . In 061, the school was upgraded to 'Plus Two'.

Today, Durga Laxmi is one of the schools with the largest number of students in the Far West. The current number of students is 2,852  . Law, management, humanities, education, science, computer, engineering are taught in classes 11 and 12. Students from all nine districts of the Far West come to study classes 11 and 12 in this school.

'We are focusing on science and mathematics right from the basic level . We are giving more priority to engineering and science in grades 11 and 12,' said Hari Bhattarai, chairman of the management committee.

In the last academic session, 94 percent of students from this school passed the municipal level examination of grade 5. 71.38 percent passed in grade 8 and 55.81 percent passed in SEE. The school's records show that the passing percentage for grade 12 is 39.95.

The school's glory has also increased as students who have studied here have been able to get their names in the scholarship quota for studies including medical education, engineering, says Principal Bir Bahadur Mahara. A girl from this school had scored a 4 GPA in the SEE of 2080.

In the opinion of Surat Bahadur Bista, chairman of the school's parents' association, the positive aspects of the school are clean classrooms, regularity of students, committed teachers and regular teaching.
