The dispute between the Area Police Office Karopguard in Tripurasundari Municipality-5 and the locals of Lha village in the same ward regarding the disappearance of a local youth has not been resolved.
The Provincial Police Office Surkhet has also deployed a three-member investigation committee led by SP Ram Prasad Gharti Magar to investigate the incident. However, the investigation team has been stopped in the middle of the road after the locals declared a traffic ban since Saturday night. The investigation team, which set out towards the incident site in the morning, has been stopped in the middle of the road till Sunday evening.
The investigation team was stopped in Talnubagar, Jajarkot, after locals attacked the Khadang Bazaar and insisted on not allowing it to enter, informed DSP Ruk Bahadur Khadka of Dolpa. 'We had requested for facilitation. The team has not been able to move forward since the locals refused,' DSP Khadka said.
Preparations are underway for talks with the victims in Tripurakot, the municipality's center, according to Chief District Officer Bhimraj Koirala.
Locals have alleged that a 34-year-old youth from Lha village, Jun Rokaya, jumped into the Bheri River and disappeared after being chased by the police on the pretext of questioning. Locals have been protesting since Saturday, declaring a traffic ban demanding that the missing Rokaya's condition be ascertained.
DSP Khadka said that the dispute arose after they tried to question Rokaya at the Chhepke Bridge, about three kilometers from the police post, on suspicion of drug trafficking. He said that Rokaya panicked and jumped into the large Bheri River before the police could question him. DSP Khadka said that the locals and the police have been searching the Bheri River since morning.
Since the incident took place on the main road leading to the district, large and small vehicles entering and leaving the district have been stopped on the road, while hundreds of passengers have been stranded. After the dispute escalated, the locals of Lha even vandalized the police post on Saturday evening. Four policemen were killed by hiding in the houses of locals on Saturday night after the crowd increased.
Chief District Officer Koirala said that justice will be given to the victims after a fair investigation into the incident. A large number of security personnel have been mobilized in the Khadang area.
