Farmers demand investigation into apple insurance

What you should know

Apple farmers in Jumla have been protesting since Sunday, alleging delays in paying apple insurance premiums.

They are working on everything from holding talks with insurance companies and local administrations to holding street demonstrations and sit-ins.

After the talks between farmers, insurance companies and the administration office on Monday failed to yield any results, the farmers have put forward five demands. The farmers have demanded an investigation, saying that Shikhar Insurance Company has delayed paying the amount claimed for the damage to apples.

After the discussions between apple farmers, insurance companies and local administrations at the District Administration Office on Sunday failed to reach any conclusion, the farmers got angry and locked the insurance company's office. The apple farmers of Kanakasundari, Patarasi and Tatopani in the district have written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Insurance Development Board through the district administration to investigate the matter of cheating the farmers, said Ward Chairman of Tatopani-4 Amar Bahadur Rokaya.    They have also warned the team, including the company's central representative General Manager Udit Prasad Kafle, not to leave the district until the investigation is completed.

The team led by General Manager Kafle arrived in Jumla on Saturday to solve the problems seen in Jumla. The farmers have warned not to open the lock on the branch office of Shikhar Insurance Company without a conclusion and to strongly oppose any other attempt to open the lock.

If the farmers' demands are not met, the farmers are demanding that the Shikhar Insurance office be immediately removed and declared an ineligible company.

The team led by General Manager Kafle, deployed from the center of the Apple Insurance Victims Initiative Committee, has emphasized that they should return only after properly addressing the demands of the insurance victims of Tatopani, Patarasi and Kanakasundari.

The team has accused the government of delaying payment and creating a situation of conflict by using words like "dissatisfied farmers can take legal action". 599 farmers in Tatopani and 400 farmers in Kanakasundari are not able to receive apple insurance money.
