An investigation committee has been formed into the incident of the death of a detainee in Surkhet. The five-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Hit Prasad Poudel, Administrative Officer of the District Administration Office, Surkhet.
The committee includes Ward No. 11 Chairman Khimlal Devkota, Human Rights Network member Pitambar Dhakal, National Dalit Journalists Association member and Karnali Province Secretary Malati BK, and Geeta Sunar on behalf of the deceased's family.
A drug trafficking case inmate who was in the custody of the District Police Office, Surkhet, died on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Gange Sunar, 26, of Birendranagar Municipality-11, Pipira. According to District Police Spokesperson DSP Mohanjung Budthapa, the deceased was found unconscious in his bed at 5:58 am on Friday. His friends who were sleeping with him tried to wake him up in the morning and informed the police on duty. He said, 'We immediately took him to the provincial hospital. The doctor declared him dead.' DSP Budthapa said that he has been in custody for 78 days. According to him, the case was filed with the government prosecutor's office four days ago and his case was filed today (Friday). The police have said that they have reviewed the CCTV footage installed in the detention center after the death of the detainee.
According to Surkhet Police Chief Sudhir Raj Shahi, the deceased is a drug user till now. The police found him while doing business. He said, 'There were 3 of them. Everyone who lived together was together.' It was filed in court three or four days ago. If the court had decided, he could have been in jail. ' He said that the condition of the deceased was normal and there was nothing wrong. He had a common cold.
He said, 'He was doing well in the detention center, mingling with his friends. We asked everywhere, there is CCTV footage. Yesterday he slept laughing. When he woke up in the morning, his sleeping friend called him to wake up, and he was in charge of cell number 5 out of four or five. That didn't work, so we woke up another friend too. Then he started screaming out of suspicion. We called the police, and when we went there immediately, we saw that he was unconscious. We immediately took him to the hospital, but he was already dead. He said that he had watched the CCTV footage and even talked about it, but nothing had happened. Police Chief Shahi said that the CCTV footage was also clear and that nothing had been seen even after questioning everyone.
Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased had protested outside the District Police Office on Friday afternoon, demanding a fair investigation into the incident. The agitation has been stopped immediately after the formation of the investigation committee.
District Police Chief Shahi said that a doctor was called from Nepalgunj on Saturday for the postmortem of the deceased. He said that since there was no specialist doctor in Karnali for the postmortem of the deceased, a doctor from the forensic department was called for the postmortem.
