The number of brain tumor patients in Nepal has been increasing in recent years. According to the data released today on the occasion of World Brain Tumor Day, the number of brain tumor patients has increased this year compared to the previous year.
The data was made public based on a study conducted by more than 20 neuro centers across Nepal, said Dr. Rajiv Jha, the founding chairman of the National Brain Tumor Center. According to him, in 2082, 3,000 brain tumor patients were operated on. In 2081, this number was 2,600.
The data shows that more men are among the brain tumor patients who underwent surgery. There are 1,502 men and 1,498 women. He said that the highest number of patients are in the age group of 30 to 50 years. According to the data, the highest number of patients have been operated on in Bagmati Province, 36.4 percent.
Senior neurosurgeon Dr. Jha said that the number of brain tumor patients in Nepal is increasing every year and that many patients' lives can be saved if treated at an early stage.
According to him, stage 1 and 2 brain tumors can be treated through surgery, while stage 3 and 4 patients are treated with various therapies along with surgery. Glioma (a type of tumor) patients are the most in Nepal. The proportion of high-grade glioma has increased from 43.1 percent in 2082 to 55.9 percent. Similarly, meningioma (a type of tumor) patients have increased from 7.4 percent to 27.1 percent in 2082.
Symptoms of brain tumors such as constant headache, vomiting upon waking up in the morning, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and paralysis in the body are among the symptoms of brain tumors. Dr. Jha said that Bir Hospital has been providing free brain tumor surgeries for the past two years and that this service will be available till June.
World Brain Tumor Day is being celebrated today with the slogan ‘Increasing public awareness of early detection and reducing the diagnosis gap’.
