Mental health campaigner Bharat Nepal has been awarded Australia's prestigious 'Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)'. The Governor-General of Australia has announced the 'Australia Day Honours List' for 2026, honouring 949 people, including Nepal, for their outstanding contributions to the community, service and public life. Nepal, a resident of Lalor Park, New South Wales, Australia, has been honoured under the 'Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)' General Division for his outstanding service to the Nepali community and the mental health sector. His contribution has highlighted the success of decades of community leadership, advocacy and culturally sensitive mental health programs. Nepal is also the founding president of the Australian Nepal Public Link, which was established in 2012. Through the said organization, it has been playing an important role in promoting social cohesion, cultural participation and well-being in the Nepali-Australian community.
In the field of health and community services, he has worked as a health education officer, counselor, researcher, and mental health first aider throughout New South Wales, Australia. His contribution to raising awareness, removing stigma, and expanding access to mental health, especially among the Nepali and South Asian communities, is noteworthy.
Reacting after the honor, he noted that Nepal still has a lot of work to do in the field of mental health and community well-being. He said that continuous efforts are needed to address the gaps in the support system for the migrant community.
