New food and drink flavors are constantly being discussed on social media. Currently, ‘Egg Coffee’ is in the news. This coffee culture originated in Hanoi, Vietnam in the 1940s. It is called ‘Ca Fe Trong’ in Vietnamese.
In this, egg yolks are mixed with sugar and condensed milk. The mixture is then poured over strong Vietnamese coffee. The sweet, soft drink ‘Egg Coffee’ is prepared. Many on social media have compared it to marshmallow sweets.
In Italy, a similar traditional drink ‘Jablonne’ is popular. There, egg yolks are also mixed with sugar and served with coffee. A video of ‘Egg Coffee’ that went viral on Instagram on February 18 received more than 400,000 likes.
‘The best coffee in the world,’ one person wrote in a comment. Many such videos are scattered on social media.
But the health risks of this coffee outweigh the benefits, said MD Sujatha Reddy, a physician living in Georgia, USA. She said that it can cause salmonella bacteria infection. Reddy said that eggs should be cooked to completely inactivate salmonella bacteria.
Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, vomiting and other problems, she said. While making ‘egg coffee’, the yolk of the egg is not fully cooked. Salmonella bacteria can be active.
Reddy said that the bad effects of salmonella may be more visible in pregnant women and the elderly. ‘In terms of nutritional quality, there is not much difference between raw and cooked eggs. And, condensed milk is high in calories.’
Reddy also warned that consuming raw eggs can weaken the body’s ability to absorb certain B vitamins.
