India's Centers for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that only two people have been infected with the Nipah virus in western Bangladesh since last December.
The NCDC said that both the infected people are healthcare workers. The NCDC also informed that 196 people who came in contact with them have tested negative.
'It is observed that speculative and incorrect figures are being circulated in some sections of the media regarding Nipah virus disease (NVD) cases,' the NCDC said in a statement. 'As per the report received from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), only two confirmed cases of Nipah virus disease have been reported from West Bengal since last December.'
After the confirmation of these two cases, the Government of India has taken various preventive measures in coordination with the West Bengal government.
Officials said that work is being done to keep the suspected people under observation and to conduct laboratory tests for identification.
'The situation is under constant surveillance and all necessary public health measures are being implemented,' the NCDC said in a statement.
