”When we did this analysis, we didn't see any evidence that paracetamol increased the risk of autism. There was no association,” said lead study author and consultant obstetrician Professor Asma Khalil.

A new study has shown that paracetamol is safe to use during pregnancy, and there is no evidence that its use increases the risk of problems such as autism or developmental delays in children.
Earlier last year, US President Donald Trump had urged the use of paracetamol as it was harmful to health . Health organizations immediately criticized his statement. A new review published in the Lancet journal states that the debate over its safety should end.
Earlier last year, the Trump administration had said that paracetamol and Tylenol (a painkiller taken by women during pregnancy) could cause autism in unborn children.
This had created a dilemma among health workers and pregnant women. A new study has refuted it.
This report, published in ‘Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women’s Health’, analyzed 43 studies on the use of paracetamol during pregnancy. These studies included millions of women.
The study also compared mothers who took the drug during pregnancy with mothers who did not take the drug.
‘When we did this analysis, we didn’t see any evidence that paracetamol increased the risk of autism. There was no association,’ said lead study author and consultant obstetrician Professor Asma Khalil. ‘The message is clear, paracetamol is considered a safe option in pregnancy when used as directed by a doctor.’
Khalil, who is a professor at St George’s, University of London, added, ‘This is important because paracetamol is the first medicine we recommend to pregnant women for pain or fever.’
