Tribhuvan University (TU) Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj has announced that it will discontinue all services under the health insurance program.

The hospital has issued a notice stating that it will stop all services under health insurance from Magh 1. The Health Insurance Board has said that it has taken this decision after only 50 percent of the hospital's insurance claims were approved and the rest were rejected. It has also been stated that the hospital has paid about 400 million rupees in insurance claims so far. It has been stated that there has been no hearing despite the hospital's problems for two years and that the hospital has had to bear all daily expenses from its internal resources. The hospital has stated in a press release that it will stop all treatment under the Nepal Government's health insurance from Magh 1 as it has been unable to operate health insurance due to a monthly loss of 20 million rupees. However, according to Raghunath Kafle, Executive Director of the Health Insurance Board, the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital has stated that the service will not be stopped. 'They have sent us a letter. We have already talked to the director there about this. Whatever the issues are, everything will be discussed. We have asked not to stop any service,' he said, 'How can such a big hospital stop the people from getting services?'

Kafle says that the amount that was released by the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital is not yet due. He says, 'There is no need to pay such a large amount.' But they may have other issues. There are some suggestions in the packages of facilities they mentioned, we will discuss them in the coming days. Now they say that they will issue a new notice and continue the service.'

But the Executive Director of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Subash Acharya, has announced that all services under insurance will be closed from Magh 1. According to him, Tribhuvan University has claimed a monthly health insurance expense of 45 million to 50 million. However, the board has been paying only 25 million and he says that the problem has not been resolved despite repeatedly asking the Health Insurance Board about it.

‘How does a teaching hospital operate health insurance while incurring a monthly loss of more than 20 to 25 million? We repeatedly raise our problems with the Health Insurance Board, but they say they are doing it, they are doing it,’ he said, ‘When we tell them our problems, they do not know. They say the calculations are not correct.’

Acharya says that the hospital cannot bear the loss of 25-26 million rupees a year for the health insurance policy.
