First President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has said that it is a matter of pride that Nepal has been able to win the trust of Indian patients in eye treatment for three decades.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed building of Birgunj Drishti Eye, Nose, Ear and Throat Hospital on Saturday, Yadav said this. ‘Nepal’s eye treatment has become more specialized and superior than the eye hospitals in the northern states of India,’ he said. ‘After the Panchayat period, Nepal has made great strides in eye treatment.’
Recalling that at one time, Nepalis used to go to Sitapur Eye Hospital in Uttar Pradesh, India for treatment, Yadav said that it is commendable that patients from states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Bengal in India are now coming to Nepal for quality eye treatment.
He also said that since patients come to treat them with high expectations from doctors and health workers, these professionals should leave no stone unturned to provide quality service. He said that the medical profession should be filled with humanitarian service rather than making money.
Drishti Eye Care System Executive Director Dr. Bhairaja Shrestha said that the hospital, which was started in a rented building in Birgunj 11 years ago, has now been able to operate from its own building. He informed that Drishti's three hospitals across the country have been successful in treating more than 1.3 million patients in a decade. He said that more than 100,000 eye surgeries have been performed.
Medical Director of the hospital, Hari Sharma, said that the hospital is providing services with the aim of ensuring that no patient goes blind due to lack of treatment expenses.
Hospital Chairman Bishwaraj Gautam said that the hospital plans to increase more state-of-the-art services targeting patients in the coming days.
At the ceremony, Dr. Radhakrishna Koirala and Dr. Bir Singh Thapa, who have been serving as eye specialists for a long time, were honored. Former President Yadav honored them with a dosalla and a certificate of appreciation. Dr. Yadav said that the honored doctors are also his classmates and colleagues.
