Nepal's transplant specialist Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha has been awarded the title of 'Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons' (FRCS) by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
The college has conferred the honor on Dr. Pukar for establishing liver and kidney transplant services in Nepal with world-class results. Shrestha, who returned to Nepal after completing his studies in transplantation in the UK, was honored for his significant contribution to the establishment and expansion of kidney and liver transplant services, the college said.
Dr. Pukar started kidney transplant services at Bir Hospital. He established the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in 2069 and has performed kidney transplants on more than 1,600 patients across the country.
His group also performed kidney transplants on 13 brain-dead patients, liver transplants on 4 patients, and combined kidney and liver transplants on one patient.
