10 virus tests conducted at Bir Hospital

What you should know

Simultaneous testing of 10 different respiratory disease viruses has been started at Bir Hospital. Simultaneous testing of 10 types of respiratory disease viruses has been started at the hospital's Medical Genetics Laboratory, said Dr. Neelam Thakur, head of the hospital's Medical Genetics Department.

He said that since it was difficult to diagnose a patient's disease by testing different viruses for the same disease, testing for 10 diseases at once has been started. 'Earlier, we used to test for the viruses of those 10 diseases at different times, but now testing at the same time is also less expensive,' he said, 'It also reveals which virus caused which disease, and multiple tests are not required.'

He said that once the disease is diagnosed with the virus, treatment will be provided in the hospital. Similarly, the laboratory has also started testing for six viruses related to brain infection at the same time, informed the head of the department, Dr. Thakur. The laboratory also tests for tuberculosis that affects parts other than the lungs. Due to lack of manpower and equipment, the laboratory, which was established in 2073 BS to identify and treat genetic diseases, has not been able to test for the disease regularly.

A disease that is caused by a condition in the gene (lineage) is called a genetic disease. "This is the only laboratory that is officially designated to detect genetic diseases," he said. "However, we are unable to conduct daily disease tests because we have only three people and do not have sufficient equipment." According to him, the tests are conducted on a rotating basis, with a day off. Currently, the laboratory regularly tests for 25 genetic disease viruses.
