A draft of the guidelines prepared to ensure the care, education and rights of people with autism spectrum disorder has been submitted to the Ministry of Health.

While understanding the draft, Health Minister Pradeep Paudel promised that the government has taken it as an important asset and that it will be discussed with priority in the relevant committees in the coming days. He said that this draft is a milestone in identifying autism and providing the necessary action for it.  What is in the

draft? The

draft acknowledges autism as a serious public health challenge and points out the need for concerted efforts at the national level for its integrated and multisectoral management. The key provisions of the draft have proposed a detailed and step-by-step action plan to make life easier for people with autism. The

draft has clarified the role of federal, state and local governments. It is envisioned to form a National Autism Committee at the federal level to ensure policy making, legislation and investment. It has been suggested that regional resource centers should be established at the provincial level and public awareness raising and training programs should be conducted.

has also seen the local level as the backbone of autism management, where the wards allocate budget and expect to arrange early detection, screening and basic therapy services of autism through women health volunteers at the community level. According to the guidelines, a clear roadmap has also been set for early identification, diagnosis and intervention.
