The resident doctors, who started protesting against the government's decision regarding subsistence allowance, boycotted the non-emergency services of the hospital for 3 hours on Sunday. According to the Safe Workplace Struggle Committee for Health Workers, OPD services in private medical colleges and some government hospitals across the country have been shut down for 3 hours.
Health Minister Pradeep Paudel and Education Minister Vidya Bhattarai had decided to give subsistence allowance of Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 per month to resident doctors studying in private medical colleges.
Ministers Paudel and Bhattarai had decided to make a legal arrangement to give subsistence allowance of 25,000 in the first year, 30,000 in the second year and 35,000 in the third year. They also decided to study MD, MS and other subjects free of charge in private medical colleges on the condition of working for two years.
Resident doctors say the decision is not valid. They say that because of the said decision, labor will be exploited. Coordinator of the Sangharsh Committee Dr. Sesharaj Ghimire said that until the government fulfills the demand, the daily agitation will continue and the period of boycott will be extended.
'We have boycotted OPD services for only 3 hours so that the common people are not killed too much,' he said, 'If the government does not listen to the demand, we will be forced to boycott services except for emergencies.' Sanjay Baral issued a statement and requested to participate in the sit-in by putting down the pen.
Doctors participated in the demonstration by boycotting non-essential services from 9 am to 12 pm. Doctors in Pokhara's Manipal Medical College, Chitwan, Gandaki, Nepalgunj Medical College, District Hospital Dhankuta, Charikot, Dadeldhura, Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences, Dhulikhel Hospital under Kathmandu University, Bhojpur District Hospital, Dullu Hospital, Chautara, Dolpa and Madhyabindu Nagar Hospital, etc. are Hospitals reported that services were affected when doctors boycotted work.
The resident doctors started protesting and protesting against the government's decision since last week. They had been protesting at Maitighar Mandal, Medical Education Commission and various hospitals in Kathmandu.
There is a demand for residential doctors to get a subsistence allowance equal to the eighth level (48 thousand rupees) per month and to be assigned a period of duty like the government medical college. According to them, medical colleges employ resident doctors for more than the prescribed hours of the Labor Act.
