Demand of health volunteers: We should also be included in social security

Parvati Maharjan of Kirtipur, even though she has reached 55 years of age, has not lost any energy and enthusiasm. His main work is to spread public awareness about safe motherhood, newborn hygiene, vaccination and nutrition programs by conducting door-to-door programs.

Maharjan of Kirtipur Municipality-5 has been active in spreading health awareness for the past 36 years. She says that now common people are also starting to be careful about their health. But it is his experience that the elephants still have to run to feed the medicine against the disease.

He demands that the attitude of the Maharjan government towards health volunteers should change.  "If I had another job, I would have been able to get pension by now." It would have been better if our allowance had been increased,' she said.

47-year-old Hiramaya of Shrestha Tokha Municipality-4 has been working as a health volunteer since 2052. She opined that the government should increase the facilities they get. Even if the government told us free public transport  It has not been implemented yet,' she said, 'Even today, I don't get a discount on the car when I come to work.'

Basanti Maharjan, a health volunteer of Chandragiri Municipality-17, said that she also became a health volunteer because of her mother's inspiration and learning. 53-year-old Maharjan is currently the president of the Nepal Health Volunteers Association. She complained that the government did not pay attention to women health volunteers even though they were described as pillars of health. "We have worked tirelessly". But we are happy. We are not even tired of our work, but are we being thought of?,' she asked. Maharjan mentioned that the allowance of 400 rupees given to the volunteers was low and said that it is necessary to increase it. "We are working so hard, but the government has not been able to provide the appropriate facilities," she said.

Geeta Thing Poudel of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-16 also said similar to Maharjan. She also said that the work of health volunteers has not been evaluated. "Whatever responsibility is given to us, we fulfill it, we have made an identity in the society by this, our demand is that the government evaluates our work properly," she said.

Paudel, who is also the president of Nepal Health Volunteer Association, is of the opinion that health volunteers should not be subjected to labor exploitation. She says, "It is thought that health volunteers work for free". They also make us participate in work other than health .'

It is said that female community health volunteers can work till the age of 60. Similarly, there is a rule that they will be given 20,000 rupees at the time of their farewell. For so many years, the sisters work selflessly. Is their assessment only that? At least  Our demand is that it should be increased to one lakh rupees,' he demanded.

He also demands that the allowance given to health volunteers should be increased from Rs.400 to Rs.1500.  "Government should think about contribution-based social security". So that we will also be motivated to work. The government should work to increase energy . "You can't do the same thing as a volunteer," she said.

The government started the women's community health volunteer program in 28 districts from the year 2045. Health volunteers have been playing a role in society related to nutrition and vaccination programs, transmission and epidemic disease control, environmental and personal hygiene, family planning advice, safe motherhood and newborn hygiene.

Women community health volunteers are currently serving across the country helping to deliver preventive and promotional services. There are currently 51,423 female community health volunteers serving.
