What has changed in the country in three and a half decades? What hasn't changed? Shrestha, a 75-year-old Krishna devotee from Dharan, can answer this question in many ways. He is not a leader of any party, he is not a researcher, but he is aware of many events of change and changes in Nepali society. Why not, for the last 36 years, he has been living under the same identity, Hawker.
Even after being born in Dharan, the devotee of Krishna did not dream of becoming Lahure . Because he was born in the year 2008 and died of coccyx within 6 months. At that time his leg was broken . Due to lack of timely treatment, he lost balance on both his legs after this incident. Krishna, the son of a farmer father, did not even get the opportunity to study above 10th standard . Due to his disability, he could not enjoy farming with his father. He became a hawker after coming down from the railway village to Dharan. Since then, he has been a reader of every news of the changing Nepal, but also a witness to the changing Dharan as he travels around selling newspapers. In
dialect, he has got the introduction of Dharan's oldest hawker . But he is not attached to this first one . Instead, he witnessed the sight of people hanging on their mobile phones asking when the newspaper will come and knowing the news of the country and the world.
Once upon a time, Krishna wanted to sell magazines. Dharan's old market, Chata Chowk, Ratna Road were the main markets of Dharan at that time. There was a line of Mainali bookstores and other bookstores. There was a crowd of people coming to read the newspaper in the morning. Now Dharan's brilliance is known by the speed of Bhanuchok .
'But at that time, where was Bhanuchok like it is now,' he said, 'Bhanuchok was deserted then .' In memory of the damage caused to Dharan by the devastating earthquake of 2045 and the dead, the Nepalese immigrants from Hong Kong and Macao built a clock house in Bhanuchok in 2048, spending about 56 lakhs based on the clock house in Hong Kong. And then the vanuchok started to shine . He said, 'How fast time seems to change, the streets of Banuchok, which were deserted before, are now crowded.'
Krishna clearly remembers when the Maoist people's war was at its height and before the mass movement, newspaper sales were booming. Because there were no other means of news. He said, 'People were curious about what's in the news today, what happened where, what are the heroines doing, which movie is being released, who has played in it . The only means of erasing it was the newspaper .'
In the beginning, Dharan, which had only 11 wards, was divided into 19 wards by merging some areas of Banjhagara village panchayat on the east side and Ghopa village panchayat on the west side in 2035. According to the decision of the Council of Ministers on 25th of Baisakh 2071, Krishna is a witness of the events until Panchkanya borough was merged into Dharan municipality and 23 wards were established.
On November 16, 2071, Bishnupaduka village was also merged into Dharan municipality and 27 wards were established and increased to Dharan sub-metropolitan city . Dharan has been known by Krishna through newspaper news and has come to understand it on foot. He has seen the hustle and bustle of Dharan as the main route to the eastern hilly district and also the suffering of those who come from the hilly area to buy salt on foot for several days. He has seen everyone from those who came to Dharan in search of treatment to those who are looking for the future. He told the witness of the changing Dharan, 'A lot of things changed while watching.'
He also had to work as a hawker at the height of the Maoist conflict. He secretly sold newspapers. Remembering that time, he said, 'Maoist people were found on the roads. They used to call me comrade-comrade . While I was free .' Being a
hawker, he used to get the news of the country and the world faster than the readers. That's why he knew all the big and small leaders easily. Until the people's movement, he used to sell newspapers. Newspapers all over the world could be sold at once . He used to earn 15,000 a month easily by selling all newspapers from local to national. He said, 'When the price of the newspaper was 3 rupees, the earnings were not so small.'
The number of newspaper readers decreased after the internet reached homes and mobile phones reached hand-to-hand. Krishna's work also decreased and so did his income. Krishna, who is spending his old age by paying rent in 3500 rooms in Parvati tol located in Dharan-16, is now worried about how to meet the 5000 rupees he has to pay for electricity, water and electricity every month and other food expenses. The 3 daughters who have gone home after getting married sometimes remember him and ease their sorrow. He said with emotion, 'At that time, I was not able to add land, if I had added some property, I would have had my own house . Today, he has to live on rent in someone else's house.'
Dharan turned into a city from the banks of the river and the dense forest. Those who read newspapers will be angry on mobile phones. But Krishna feels that his life is getting worse and worse. Even though everything has changed, Krishna's hard working nature has not changed and so has his profession. The digital age has come since
magazine but Kushna's life has never changed. It got worse and worse. The city changed and became new, but poverty and the old lifestyle did not bring any new changes in his life . He is still the same simple, plain and hard working .
Like before, he doesn't have to walk around in Toltol . Where is the place in Dharan where the car cannot reach? He said, 'Where was such a facility before! I did not see a car, but now I see the traffic on the roads . There is a sky-high difference between Dharan before and now.'
Krishna has introduced a hardworking, simple and good man. He says, 'I was just a simple person selling a newspaper but the story of my life and existence seems to have been written by Dharan.'
