Tourists who came to Pokhara only five years ago did not remember the name of the mountain. So much so that even the tourists who reach Mustang, Baglung and Myagdi through this route did not know the mountain. Tourists used to go to Mustang through the headquarters Kushma. Kushma's hoteliers had no choice but to remain silent.
Despite being full of potential and natural beauty, the mountain was alien to tourists. Vikas Paudel of Kushma told that when he was studying in Kathmandu a decade and a half ago, his friends called him Baglung after more than his house Parbat sought funds. "Introducing a new friend while meeting, he said the house is a mountain, everything will be quiet," he jokingly remembers the moments with his friends.
For the first time in Kushma in 2068, after the construction of the Kushma-Gyadi suspension bridge with the claim of being the highest bridge in Nepal, some tourists who reach Mustang get stuck on the bridge for a short time . So far, 5 high and long suspension bridges have been constructed around Kushma. This bridge has facilitated the daily life of the locals of the villages around Kushma, Baglung and has helped in the tourist activities.
To increase the number of tourists coming to the bridge and to make Kushma a destination, the businessmen here came forward and thought of introducing bungee operation on the Kushma-Gyadi Jholunge bridge around 2071 . Under the leadership of Shiv Prasad Sharma, President of Mountain Tourism Promotion Center, reached Bhotekoshi Bunji in Sindhupalchok to study the feasibility. They brought Vishnu Neupane, the owner of 'The Last Resort' who was conducting bungee jumping in Bhotekoshi, to the mountain and conducted a study on bungee operation.
'As it is the first high and long suspension bridge in Nepal, the crowd of people came to see the Kushma-Gyadi suspension bridge . The time taken by the locals of Dakshin Parbat to reach Kushma from 2 hours was reduced to 5 minutes due to the bridge," President Sharma said, "The movement of people had to be stopped when the bungee was operated. When we saw that there would be opposition from the public, we withdrew.'
Raju Karki, working as a cannoning instructor at The Last Resort, heard that the possibility of bungeeing from the mountain had been studied. The main responsibility of the canyoning instructor who conducts the adventure activity is to provide an exciting and safe experience while ensuring the safety of the participants in the canyoning. Karki also worked there as a bungee and swimming instructor. He started working with 3 thousand rupees and made it possible to get salary up to 120 thousand rupees. Karki worked there for 7 years .
It was at that time, Karki, who was born and raised in Sindhupalchowk, heard the name 'Mountain' loudly for the first time. The mountain echoing in his ears also stirred his mind. And, the dream of bungee operation on the high and long suspension bridge in the mountain began to weave. Kushma came and told some of the businessmen here about the plan to operate Bungee and encouraged them to invest. Tank Lamichhane, Meen Prasad Shrestha and others came to join. It must have been around 2073, we spent a lot of time for bungee operation on the public Budgaon-Kaiya Jhulunge Bridge in Kushma, but it was not successful. The local development officer at the time protested by showing that there would be problems when bungees are operated in public places,' said Karki. He has a lot of unpleasant experiences from the ministry of
when he went to different offices, he did not say no to you, but he had to be reprimanded for how many times he came, and he did not get good treatment from the staff. Even though the dream of operating a bungee on a public bridge was lost, he made a decision to stop operating the bungee at any cost. The old group that had supported him till now had left and Yuvraj Joshi, Netraprasad Parajuli, Rajan Joshi and Navraj Sharma joined him. After that, his group started the construction of a private bridge over Kaligandaki river by opening a company named 'The Cliff Pvt Ltd'. He is also the chairman of this company .
At that time, he remembers that after the bank did not give a loan in the name of the company, all the members of the group took a loan of 80 million rupees by mortgaging their personal land. "After one year of the company's operation, after our business and Bunji's publicity were good, the bank returned the mortgage of our personal property," says Karki, "Now the investment worth 600 million has been made in The Cliff, and 110 employees are employed."
A 520-meter long and 228-meter high bridge has been constructed over the Kaligandaki river connecting Kushma mountain and Balewa in Baglung. From here you can enjoy bungee and swing at the same time. Those who don't bungee and swing can enjoy the thrilling bridge trip. The company has also launched activities including resort, commercial sky cycling, mega troll, sky cafe, wall climbing, Gully Ping, crazy bridge, sky gliding, sky cheer. Our plan was to complete the construction work in 2 years, but after the contractor delayed, it took four to five years. Later, after canceling the contract with the contractor, we brought in skilled workers and started the work ourselves,' Karki said, 'We started the business formally from 2077 . There was a lot of excitement as the government had also announced the year of tourism. But that's when the Corona epidemic started.'
Ramche's Deal, formerly a place for monkeys to live, gather and defecate, is now known as Bunji Side. After Bunji came into operation, more than four dozen hotels and restaurants have been opened in Ramche's Deal and surrounding areas. Many have got employment . Business has flourished due to foreign tourists.
has become a tourist target structure one after the other . Another young businessman Sunil Baniyan's group has also launched a zipline and riverside resort in 2078 under the name of The Harness Company. After crossing the distance of 1480 meters, the landing resort of the zipline is in summer.
32-year-old Mausam Acharya of Kushma has given up his dream of going abroad and started restaurant business because of bungee. Previously, he was waiting for a visa to go abroad with a tea shop in a small tin shop, and after Bunji started operating, he gave up his dream of going abroad in 2080 and decided to expand the business . I have established a restaurant called Bunji Hill Side with an investment of 60 lakhs. The land was ancestral, I took the loan from the bank . Now, by paying all the bank money, some money has been saved,' says Mausam, 'Banji has helped to spread the identity of the mountain in the country and abroad and has brought many good opportunities for young people like him.'
Locals say that bungee operation in Kushma is a happy thing . "Earlier, it was difficult to see new faces in Kushma, let alone foreigners," says Indrakumari Chhetri, a local resident, "now it's very fun when people come from everywhere." When people from abroad make videos about Kushma on Facebook, YouTube and Tiktok, it will be a special fun.''
The family of Basant Kharal, who came from Butwal to visit Mustang, spent the whole day roaming around the bungee complex, enjoying the high and long bridge, and reached the nearby Gupteshwar temple to worship. Enjoying taking pictures with his son, two daughters and his wife at the Kushma-Mudikuwa suspension bridge, he said that one day he would stay in Kushma and in the morning he would leave Palpa and go to Butwal via the Kaligandaki corridor.
Many prefer to travel on corridor roads as the distance becomes shorter. Thakur V Paudel, president of Parbat Industry and Commerce Association, says that although the number of people who come to bungee is good, it is not able to help in promoting the business of Kushma market as a whole. He emphasizes that instead of taking tourists directly to Bunji by car, they should create a parking lot at a certain place and create an environment where tourists can walk to Kushma Bazaar and take them to Bunji.
Kushma municipality should take the lead in activities that reflect the beauty of Kushma, starting from putting the products produced by mountain farmers in the village for sale in the market, said President Paudel, "hotels and restaurants should also serve local food produced in the mountains to tourists and it seems that tourists will be attracted if they conduct business without making too much profit."
President Karki says that the number of tourists who have come to 'The Cliff' since 2077 is more than three lakh. According to him, more than 50,000 tourists have done bungee jumping. Since there is no tourist center in the mountain, no one has the exact data of how many tourists who came to Bunji reached other tourist spots in the district.
