”I have been passing my higher education after SLC without taking a classroom,” he says, ”There is a situation where I have to work to raise household expenses. That's why I'm enrolling in college and doing self-study.'
He spends his days cutting hair and shaving his beard. 28-year-old Sonu Thakur is adept at making customers happy by cutting their hair and beard, smiling from early morning till evening.
He has been in the profession of cutting hair and beard since the age of 12. He is studying Master's degree (MSc) in the Faculty of Science from the earnings of this profession.
Cutting hair is his ancestral profession. Five decades ago, grandfather Uttimalal Thakur had reached Dhankuta from Saptari. The highway was not built at that time. His father Lal Babu continued the profession started by Uttimalal who reached Dhankuta on foot from Dharan. Now Sonu is continuing.
He has been learning hair cutting from his father since he was studying at school and now he is running 'Sonu Hair Cutting' salon under his own name in Siran Bazar located in Dhankuta Municipality-6. From the income of this shop, he is raising camp rent and food, treatment of Babu Lal Babu suffering from lung problem and also his education expenses.
After the death of Anju's mother in the year 2073, the household responsibility fell on her shoulders. He is the only child of the family. After passing 12th standard from local Gokundeshwar Secondary School in Science Faculty, he passed Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) from Dhankuta Multipurpose Campus.
The interesting thing is that even after getting both degrees, he could not take classes in school and campus. He is completing his MSc based on self-study without taking classes. "I have been getting through higher education except SLC without taking a classroom," he says, "There is a situation where I have to work to raise household expenses. That's why I'm enrolling in college and doing self-study.'
Sonu says that after the death of his mother and his father's illness, he became responsible for the household at an early age. He says, "It's not that he didn't want to go to college and study with his friends, but the situation was not favorable." Along with his studies, he is currently preparing for the Public Service Commission exam.
He jokingly said, "I am thinking of not getting married without passing the public service exam." He said that after working almost 10 hours a day in the salon, he studies the remaining time.
