In 2070, Rupakot Basic School was divided into two parts under the name of 'Congress' and 'Communist' after political turmoil. The school in the village was called 'Congress School' and a little further away from the village a 'Communist School' was opened. Based on political beliefs, parents also started sending their children to one of the two schools.
43-year-old Shanti Shahi of Jumla Hima Rural Municipality-1 Badki took charge of the principal. She became a government teacher on June 29, 2062 and was appointed as the principal of Rupakot Basic School on July 10, 2076. But Shanti was sad that the school she was leading was divided because of political beliefs, and she didn't like the dirty politics in the school.
Also, due to this political tension, parents were also feeling that their children's studies were being negatively affected. Principal Shanti, who understood this, went to the houses of the villagers and told them that they should not be divided on the basis of political beliefs. In the year 2077, she held an all-party meeting in the school and held a comprehensive discussion to solve the problem. Heads of political parties in the district, Chief District Officer gathered in all the schools . Every problem seen in the school was discussed in depth .
The district leaders of the political parties also promised to unite the school and move forward. The same circular reached among the leading workers of the village . The parents had already agreed on making the school one. Finally, Madam Shanti succeeded in making the two schools one. After that, she prepared the infrastructure with the new building and made the entire school a single school.
Now all 250 children of the whole village are studying in that school . Earlier, when the school was divided, four teachers were teaching. A teacher had to hold 16 classes. After a long discussion, the school was unified, but the physical structure was dilapidated. Due to the lack of classrooms, students were forced to study on the street.
After the school became one, Shanti started working at the Ministry of Education in Kathmandu, the capital. After meeting with the Minister of Education and the Secretary of Education, she informed the children of the lack of building. As a result, the federal government sent a budget for two buildings with four floors each. Currently, students are studying in eight concrete rooms. She appealed to the rural municipality to provide subject teachers to improve the physical structure as well as the teaching of the school. Even the local municipality could not deny Shanti's modest dedication and hired teachers on a grant to teach mathematics, English and science subjects. Currently, the school has 11 employees including teachers and office assistants. There were only 6 people when he took over.
Now the school has its own playground . The buildings are concrete. Most of the education programs at the municipal level are conducted there. Teachers, staff, students and parents are all active in what can be done to improve educational standards. It is up to the principal to decide how to make the school. If the plan of the teacher, parents and the principal is good, the school will automatically be better, Shanti said. Last year, the program that no children between the ages of 4 and 16 are out of school was also held there. Only last week, Hima rural municipality was declared literate. Now the heads of government and non-government agencies keep coming to his school . Ministers, parliamentarians, central and state education secretaries also visit his school for monitoring .
The road has reached Rupakot School . Most of the schools in the remote areas do not get water, so children do not want to go to school . But there are child-friendly taps and toilets. Principal Shanti has arranged all the materials needed by the children in the school. Students are served organic lunch in the afternoon. Among the schools in Sinja region, Rupakot Basic School has become a model. This is an opportunity for me to work. Students are getting practical knowledge from every person,' said Principal Shanti, 'with the harmony of teachers and students, parents are also becoming positive towards the school . This is a good part .'
Now she herself is shocked to see concrete buildings standing. She says that the school now needs a building. As there are no classrooms, the students of 4th, 5th and 6th are still forced to sit and study in the field. She told that budget initiatives are being taken to build buildings in the ward, rural municipality and provincial ministries. Educational materials are being used excessively in schools. The goal is to create a garden within the school.
While there is a comment that women cannot work, Shanti has become an example here . "If the house is damaged, one/two children will be damaged". But if the school deteriorates, the future of all the children studying there will deteriorate . I can't say that I was able and successful. But there is complacency," she said. When Shanti was taking charge of the school as the headmaster, no one believed that she would overcome this problem and bring it to the present state . But when Shanti, who was determined to become a teacher since childhood, continued to work for the welfare of the children and the school, she also got support from everyone.
'I am your daughter's daughter . Even though I am a teacher, I am your sister. I had promised to help, I will make the school like a school,' she said, 'if the community does not come together, the institution will not be built.' The future of children who do not become an institution will not be made . Therefore, I took a stand that the community should form an organization. Change is being seen.' Shanti says that even if everyone sees the damage, it is very difficult to remove the damaged things. "I brought the two-piece school here. I think that if I could take over a better managed school, I would make it even better," she said.
Shanti, who considers the school to be a holy place like a temple, is determined that there should be no political smell in the school. "I am running the school only by looking at the future of the children," she said, "I also teach myself." She is still not able to take classes as much as she thought because she has to do office work, I don't let the teaching stop when a teacher is on leave, instead I go and teach myself. Children from two villages are coming to study at
school now. Parents are supporting every work of the school . Those who did not send their children to school before now actively work in favor of schools. Except those who live outside the district, all the students keep coming," she said. With the positive atmosphere of the school, the teachers are also diligently engaged in teaching . Due to Shanti's leadership style, teachers across the district are impressed . She appreciates every level of staff . She loves the office assistant very much .
Because of the hardships she experienced when she was an assistant principal, she is careful not to make any teacher feel uncomfortable under her leadership. "I think that other teachers should not have to suffer the pain I got," she said. She has kept the financial accounting of the school transparent. To make it more transparent, she has recently hired an accountant. Seeing Durgam's educational situation makes me feel sad, I feel like crying. Now it has been decided to conduct classes in English medium,' she said.
Gyan Bahadur Shahi of Hima-5 says that the school has changed a lot since Madam Shanti became the principal. "There is no politics in a school that was divided into two parts politically," he said. Rupakot school is also leading the municipal level programs. Motiram Budha Shanti of neighboring Tila rural municipality says that he is happy to hear that the school has been run very well. There is a misconception that the women of remote areas should be confined to the cowshed and cowshed. Shanti madam has succeeded in breaking that illusion, he said. Among the schools in Kanakasundari, Hima and Sinja, Rupakot Basic School is among the best at present. Now it is his dream to surround the school by planting trees.
