Devi Gharti Magar has won the award for Best Folk Female Singer at the 8th Xtreme Energy Radio Kantipur National Music Awards 2082.

She received the award for her song ‘Yanimaaya’ during Radio Kantipur’s 28th anniversary celebration held at Plaza in Pulchowk on Friday.

Along with her, Shantarani Pariyar for ‘Pokhara Prithvi Chowk’, Jyoti Magar for ‘Jhyappai’, Shantishree Pariyar for ‘Manung Kotaima’, and Tika Pun for ‘Laitaai Baler Hera Mayale’ were also nominated in the Best Female Singer (Folk Music) category.

Born in Baglung, Magar was drawn to singing from a young age by the region’s rich folk culture and the environment of Roila/Salejo. She came to Kathmandu in the early 2060s. In the beginning, she sang folk songs at dohori evenings. Her debut song was ‘Barkha Lagechha’ (in collaboration with Amar Birahi Gurung), but the song that established her in the folk music market was released around 2063. That song was ‘Oralima Batti Baleko’ (in collaboration with Ramji Khand).

Since then, she has contributed many popular songs to the Nepali folk music scene. Her list of hit songs includes ‘Udaas Chhu Ma’, ‘Jhyalma Parda Chha’, ‘Rato Pachhyauri’, ‘Luki Luki Maya Nalau’, ‘Timi Mero Hun Paenaau’, ‘Ke Bhanu Ra Oili Gako Phoollai’, ‘Vanki Chari’, among others. These days, she is also the first choice for collaborations among both new and veteran artists.
