Abhaya & The Steam Engines have won the award for Best Band at the 8th Xtreme Energy Radio Kantipur National Music Awards 2082.
The band received the award for the song ‘Hey Saila’ during Radio Kantipur’s 28th anniversary celebration held at Plaza, Pulchowk, on Friday. The song was both sung and composed by Abhaya Subba.
Nepali rock and alternative music’s ‘rock star’ Subba grew up in a musical environment at home from childhood. Born in Darjeeling and later making Kathmandu her professional base, she initially established her musical career by joining bands such as ‘Red Eves’ and ‘Parijat’. In 2003, she founded the rock band ‘Abhaya & The Steam Engines’ under her own leadership.
Many of Abhaya’s songs, such as Laijau Malai, Hawahuri, Sadhainbhari, and Bansko Ghar, are popular. She has always spoken out strongly on women’s freedom and rights, not just through her songs but also in her own life.
