The 'Short Film Development Lab' is being organized with the aim of bringing Nepali short films to the international market commercially and encouraging emerging filmmakers. 'Chalchitra Lab' is going to conduct this 5-day intensive workshop in partnership with the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMF).
The best 6 projects in the script stage will be provided with extensive mentorship from development to distribution through this program. KIMMF believes that this collaboration will play a catalytic role in bridging the gap between young independent filmmakers and established producers and advancing the new generation of narrative cinema.
32 applications were received for this time's lab from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. After various rounds of selection and interviews, 6 projects have been selected for the final competition based on the mutual coordination, shared vision and dedication of the director and producer.
The selected projects include Nishan Khatri's 'Kakh', Elin Katel's 'Umbrella Over the Lamb', Divya Adhikari's 'Where I Stand', Usha Rajak's 'For Guests Only', Grisham Shrestha's 'Parijat' and Gopal Thapa's 'Ulto Akash'. Both the director and producer of these projects will have to participate in the workshop.
Participants in the lab, which will run from 7th to 11th Jestha, will receive direct guidance from national and international expert mentors. Keshav Pandey, Sujit Bidari and Nimesh Shrestha will be mentors from Nepal, while Bangladeshi producer Tanbir Hussain, UK's Ajay Rai and writer James Bang will provide training. During the workshop, participants will refine their projects and also learn skills in distribution, international festivals and professional pitching. The final phase of the lab will be 'Project Pitching' on 15th Jestha and the winners will be announced on 17th Jestha.
Attractive cash prizes and technical support have been arranged for the best projects. According to which the best three pitches will receive cash prizes of 3 lakh, 2 lakh and 1 lakh rupees respectively. In addition to the cash, the winning projects will also receive the necessary technical support in camera, light and post-production for film production. According to the founders of the Film Lab, Prabin Kumar Rawat and Sushant Shrestha, the enthusiasm of the participants is expected to ensure that Nepali short films achieve a quality that can compete in the international market.
The Lab aims to expand its network to cover all countries in South Asia by 2027.
