Pop singer Britney Spears, who was arrested last month on charges of driving under the influence, was charged with a misdemeanor in California on Thursday.
The Ventura County District Attorney's Office filed the charges against her. She was arrested on March 4 after police allegedly drove her BMW at high speed on a highway in Southern California. But the singer's representative called the incident "completely inexcusable." The 44-year-old singer has been in and out of rehab several times since the incident.
The arraignment is set for Monday, but the singer herself will not be required to appear in court because it is a common charge. "However, whether Britney will attend the hearing or not will be determined by mutual consultation between her and her attorney," the attorney's office said.
The state attorney's office, which filed the charges, said the singer would not face a prison sentence if convicted because there was no accident or casualty. Prosecutors also said the singer could be given a reduced sentence if she pleads guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Joey Buttita of the district attorney's office said Britney may be given such an option. In such cases, the defendant is usually placed on probation for a year, must take a class for drunk driving, and must pay a fine.
Britney's representative said she is confident that she will do the right thing and follow the law. "And this will be the first step in the right direction for the singer to change her life for the better," Britney's relatives said. "Everyone will be there to support her during this difficult time."
Singer Britney, who has been raising two children alone since 2024 after her marriage to Sam Asghari ended after two years, has been suffering from mental stress in recent years, and it is said that she has fallen into drug addiction due to this. She has been inactive musically since her last album in 2016, and has only worked on a few songs in duets.
