'Let's all touch ourselves once, and see if we are the same as before,' a character wearing a loose shirt and a long neckerchief is speaking on stage, 'Let's see who is left, let's see.'
As soon as the character speaks, the other characters on the stage look at each other's faces. And then, they slowly start moving. They keep repeating the same thing. When they are face to face, they seem to be talking to each other.
At that moment, another character screams in a loud voice - Oh, Kattha! Leave him alone. The loud speech attracts everyone's attention. But, the character does not stop screaming. 'What did he say?' "Does it have to talk only about itself?," he says, looking at the audience, "Oh, Kattha, what is its point? If its point is not reasonable, then it and its people should be deported from the country. Tell me, tell me, tell me…what is your point?"
These two characters were not the only ones on the stage of the Shilpi Theater on Friday. Many characters created by Prada Abhi Subedi through playwriting appeared on the same stage. These characters from the plays 'Agniko Katha', 'Sandajuko Mahabharata', 'Chirieka Sanjharu', 'Mayadevika Sapana', 'Aaruka Phoolka Sapana' and 'Jivan Teh Jivan Sam' did not just appear on the same stage.
They had climbed the stage of the Shilpi to congratulate their begetter (creator, writer, teacher) and playwright Abhi Subedi. Artists Ghimire Yubaraj, Karma, Bholaraj Sapkota, Saraswati Chaudhary, Saroj Aryal, Dilip Ranabhat and Pavitra Khadka felicitated Abhi by portraying characters from various plays. These artists also presented him with a certificate of appreciation.
On the occasion of World Theatre Day, Prof. Dr. Subedi, an honorary member of the world organization of theatre arts, 'International Theatre Institute-ITI' and the founding president of 'ITI Nepal', was felicitated. In appreciation of his contribution to the field of theatre, the new group of ITI Nepal organized 'Abhi-Abhinandan' at Shilpi.
In the 'Abhi-Abhinandan' program, Abhi told the background of how he got connected to the world theatre through 'ITI Nepal'. 'We didn't have the money to attend various ITI conferences at that time. We didn't have the money to pay the ITI fees,' Abhi said, 'At that time, I told them our situation. They used to make me write papers, and I would pay the remuneration I got for that as fees. In this way, we ran ITI.'
Saying that history should not be forgotten, Abhi also satirized current politics. 'The biggest problem of history is forgetfulness. Terrible events happen in Nepal, but they forget it as if nothing happened yesterday. Only current events are highlighted. Perhaps the same thing happens in politics now,' Subedi said, 'History should not be forgotten. A nation that forgets history is useless to any person.' Everyone present burst into laughter when Abhi explained that he did not want such an honor even though he was being given this kind of honor. He had said, 'I don't want this honor, but I did it right.' At the
program, artist Saraswati read out a message to the world from playwright William Dafoe, who was awarded the title of Bhavanuvad Amire by ITI Nepal. 'The greatest power of theater is to experience a work of creation at the same time, in the same place. A play is planned and prepared, but every time it is performed, it is different. Socially and politically, theater is more important today than ever. Because it helps us understand ourselves and the world,' Saraswati read out the message to everyone.
On the occasion of World Theater Day, Dafoe added that social media is dividing people and making them feel isolated, and also mentioned the increasing danger of replacing human relationships with relationships with devices.
'The Internet may raise questions, but the experience of wonder that theater creates is rarely found there. Theater creates a spontaneous community of people gathered in one place,' the message reads, 'Theater is a complete art form made up of story, beauty, language, body movement and stage decoration. It can show us what was, what is, and what our world could be like.'
The official announcement of the re-establishment of ITI Nepal was also made at the event. The group of theater artist Kedar Shrestha has re-established the relationship that had been severed from the ITI world for about a decade. The executive board of ITI Nepal includes Kedar Shrestha, Gunjan Dixit, Dev Neupane, Sushila Lakshmi Maharjan, Moti Bahadur Karki (Parivartan), Pavitra Khadka and Sijan Dahal.
