”It's about taking your own place. Women's politics should not be based on 'tokens' or 'favoritism' given by someone,” Nisha said. ”This is a struggle, women must participate in it.”
Actress Nisha Adhikari is among those who are directly registering their candidacy in the House of Representatives elections to be held in Falgun. The Dynamic Democratic Party has nominated Adhikari for Kathmandu Constituency No. 5.
In particular, Nisha had been raising her voice on women's participation in previous elections. She openly opposed the practice of not allowing women to contest in places where there is a lot of competition and only allowing them to win in places where victory is certain. However, the situation seems to be the same in the elections to be held in Falgun. Since it is not enough to just talk, now Nisha is contesting the elections directly. Saying that standing in the elections is one of the battles that women have to fight, Nisha has registered her candidacy directly from the Dynamic Democratic Party. For her, this step is tantamount to a victory.
'It is about occupying your own place. Women's politics should not be based on 'tokens' or 'favoritism' given by someone,' Nisha said, 'This is a struggle, women must participate in it. Winning or losing is another matter. In my eyes, I had to win myself. Therefore, registering my candidacy is a victory for me. I stepped out into the field, I had the courage.’
Nisha, who climbed Mount Everest in 2070, wanted to see the presence of many female faces in the registration process. However, the presence of women was low even in Kathmandu. Then Nisha decided to contest the election directly from the place where she grew up. According to Nisha, Kathmandu Constituency No. 5 has a 50 percent female population. Nisha plans to work on various women’s issues, from cooking to mental health, to the parliament. Many may think that Nisha is one of the ‘celebrity’ faces seen in politics after the Gen-G movement. However, that is not all. Nisha’s inclination towards politics has been there since before she joined the party. Nisha, who studied political science from undergraduate to postgraduate level, was already interested in politics. However, until now, she has focused her political consciousness only on social campaigns on the streets. Be it ‘Enough is Enough’ or other social issues, she continued to raise her voice by actively participating. Women’s participation and politics have always been a topic of interest for her, who is pursuing an MPhil in ‘Conflict, Peace and Development’.
Nisha was restless about how to do serious and agenda-driven politics. However, when she found that the Dynamic Democratic Party was moving forward with this ideology, Nisha made her debut in politics. ‘I was also of the opinion that we should open a party that would travel for a long time. I was of the opinion that we should open a “how” party that would find answers to the issue of entrepreneurship and employment,’ Nisha said, ‘That is why our party carries the slogan of entrepreneurship and sustainable employment in every ward. We have been doing homework on these issues for two years.’
According to Nisha, the Dynamic Democratic Party is not a party that was started after the Gen-G movement. It had been doing homework and moving forward for two years. She had also thought of contesting the 2004 elections from this party. However, the Gen-G movement has pushed Nisha to be more active in politics.
‘When I stood outside and raised my voice, the answer to everything was policy. So I felt that I had to go there to solve these problems,’ says Nisha, ‘The kind of massacre that happened in the Gen-G movement was very painful. From my parents to the Gen-G generation, the Gen-G generation had to raise their voice about the same corruption, and now the son I am raising has to face the same thing. That is why I came into politics for my son and his generation.’ Saying that the Gen-G movement took her out of her ‘comfort zone,’ Nisha adds, ‘After that movement, I felt like I had to do it now, if not now, then when.’
Nisha wants to pursue politics and art together rather than professional politics. Meanwhile, ‘Aankha’, in which she acted, gained attention on the international platform. The latest film produced by Nisha is ‘Jhyanakuti’. Recently, she has also joined the film ‘Kasturi’. ‘I came here not to do professional politics. That is why I will do art and politics together as long as I can,’ Nisha said, ‘There is an election atmosphere right now. What will the outcome of the election be? If the election is successful, I will be fully involved in politics, otherwise I will do art along with the party.’
Since the number of women in the House of Representatives elections is very low, she wants to express her heartfelt support to women who dare to run for office. ‘I want to support and help women from any party who stand up. Because this is our fight. Whoever dares, we should give courage to them,’ Nisha said, ‘I want to thank those who are standing up directly for their courage and courage.’
