What you should know

The film ‘The Taste of Salt’, based on the life of Chef Santosh Shah, has been selected in the ‘Co-Production’ market of the world-renowned film festival Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). The film was selected in the ‘Official Feature Project’ category among the best 19 films selected from 400 applications.

Director Deepak Rauniyar will present the film among more than 600 projects, international producers, distributors, sales agents and investors from different countries participating in the 76th edition of the Berlinale to be held in February. The film, which is currently in production, will tell the story of Santosh's struggle and success, said director Rauniyar.

'At a time when immigration and identity are being attacked around the world and countries including the US are tightening visas, I feel it is important to tell this story. Santosh - who was born in Nepal but reached the UK via India and not only made his name and career, but also introduced Nepali food and identity to the world - making a film on his story is very relevant now,' said director Rauniyar, 'The Taste of Salt is a great success story brought about by the struggle of an ordinary person.' Director Rauniyar has previously taken Nepal to international stages through films like 'Highway', 'Seto Surya' and 'Pooja, Sir'. 'The Taste of Salt' is a film made in collaboration between Nepal and the UK. The

film will cover issues of immigration, caste discrimination and deportation. Chef Santosh never thought that his personal journey would achieve such international heights. Santosh said that this film will not only be about his life but also about cooking and the struggles associated with it. "As proud as I was when my story was taught in Nepal's school curriculum, this selection at a world-renowned film festival is another great achievement," he said.

Berlinale's 'co-production market' is considered the world's leading venue for film investment and sales.
