Kathmandu University (KU) is set to offer a master's degree in film. At a press conference on Monday, KU announced the launch of the 'MFS' (Master in Film Studies) program in the presence of filmmakers and students.

'The Department of Language and Mass Communication under the School of Arts, Kathmandu University, has started a Master in Film Studies for the first time in Nepal,' said Ngima Gelu Sherpa, who has been teaching film at KU.

KU will start a master's program in film from February 2026. The master's program will be held at KU's School of Arts in Hattivan. Sherpa said that many courses, including film production, dramaturgy, and reviews, have been included in this program. 'We have also included topics from dramaturgy to how to review films in this course,' he said.

The program was attended by Film Development Board Chairman Dinesh DC, Film Directors' Society Chairman Janakdeep Parajuli, Film Critics' Society Chairman Samipyaraj Timalsina, and director Yadav Kharel.

Board Chairman Dinesh DC, while recounting the steps taken by the board this year in film studios including the bill, box office, and others, said that it is a matter of joy that postgraduate studies in film have started. Similarly, film critic Timalsina expressed confidence that this course would bridge the gap created between film and review. 'Until now, there was a big gap between film and review. I am happy to see that the subject of film review has been included here. This course will now bridge this gap between film and review,' said President Timalsina.

Director Kharel said that including film in formal education is the authority given to this field by the university. 'In particular, film is not just entertainment, it is a cultural subject. Now it is possible to study film in formal education,' said Kharel, 'There are subjects of life and the world in films.' The fact that a university like KU teaches film is the recognition given to this field.'
