Gorkhakali Women's Naumati Baja Group of Gorkha Municipality-9 has emerged first in the Ratauli Song Competition organized by the Gorkha Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Harmatari Sports Ground.
The Gorakhkali women's Naumati Baja group, which came first, was awarded a cash prize of Rs 15,000, said Sharan Shrestha, coordinator of the festival's sports and competition management committee.
Similarly, the Ramala Didi-Bahini women's group Harmatari of Gorkha-6 came second and the Progressive Agricultural Women's Group Nareshwor of Gorkha-3 came third. Those who came second and third received cash prizes of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively. Twelve groups participated in the competition. The Ratauli song competition became the center of attraction at the festival.
The importance of the Ratauli song has increased further when it is conducted competitively, says Kazibabu Aryal, creator of the folk dohori.
'Earlier, there were two-day or three-day weddings, and after the groom leaves, the song is sung in a humorous manner at night, hence the name Ratauli,' he said. 'Even though it is now a one-day wedding, this tradition has not gone away, it is our very old folk culture.'
