'Radio on Wheels' on a journey to meet listeners

What you should know

With the aim of expanding its relationship with and reaching out to its listeners, Radio Kantipur launched a road show titled 'Radio on Wheels' 10 years ago.

At that time, such a program on the street was rare. The radio started this journey after the constitution was promulgated with the aim of directly meeting and interacting with listeners in places where the radio frequency did not reach.

Now, the seventh edition of the journey has begun. Although Covid did not allow it to travel for a few years, Kantipur Radio is now reaching cities and towns with more zeal and enthusiasm to meet its listeners. The journey, which started last Saturday from BP Chowk in Nepalgunj, has reached Dhangadhi. It will reach Surkhet on Monday.

After visiting 14 cities in this way, the journey will take a break by holding a program in Kathmandu on 8th Magh. This program, which will be organized from Birtamod in the east to Dhangadhi in the west, will have special entertainment activities.

Presenter duo Mahima Bhattarai and Prajwal Khadka are traveling from city to city with such a fun program. This year, ‘Radio on Wheels’ is sponsored by Extreme Energy Drink, said Radio Kantipur’s station manager Pawan Acharya.

Presenters Mahima and Prajwal will take the program to Hetauda. Then Mahesh Limbu and Ismita Rana will reach another city. Comedian Raja Rajendra Pokhrel and singer Bishwa Nepali will accompany them. Singer Shiva Pariyar will accompany this group from Pokhara, Pawan said.

Singers from different cities are also scheduled to perform on the same stage with them. Bhojpuri singer Sunil Pandit is coming to Birgunj. Pawan says that efforts are being made to invite Maithali rapper group 'Maniya' for Janakpur and Lahan.

According to Pawan, in this one and a half hour long program, a welcome dance is performed at the beginning. The audience/listeners are attracted by asking questions and distributing prizes. Then, the winners of the draw, Extreme Energy Drink or Max Tiger Energy Drinks, distribute tickets to the T-20 World Cup. One winner in each city gets this ticket.

'It's basically like a street festival. We started with the idea that our presence should reach places where radio is not available,' Pawan says, 'but now the format of the program has changed.' Earlier, the program was organized in Chaitra earlier this time, but the cold has bothered us. However, Pawan said that the group is traveling from city to city with programs that warm up the atmosphere even in this cold.

Presenter Mahima says that every year, when we go to different cities with this program, we have a different experience. 'So far, we have done programs in two cities. It was a great experience. The crowd in Nepalgunj was very good. We got the same enthusiasm in Dhangadhi,' said Mahima.

Currently, there are 17 people in the group, including Mahima and Prajwal. World Nepali and Raja Rajendra have been performing in two cities. While the two winners of Dance Champion Nepal have been performing, Mahima's group has been choosing 'lucky draws'. Mahima says that the program has been attracting attention in every city because of the tickets given to watch the World Cup to be held in Mumbai on February 8.

Radio Kantipur has announced that after Surkhet, 'Radio on Wheels' will now travel to Butwal, Pokhara, Narayangadh, Hetauda, Birgunj, Janakpur, Lahan, Itahari, Birtamod and Dharan.
