Abhimanyu in 'Chakravyuh'

Abhimanyu: Chapter One, which has been repeatedly postponed due to the Gen-G movement and social media controversy, is now showing in theaters. While the film stands against the dowry system in a sense, it is somewhat confusing in the end.

The struggle faced by the film 'Abhimanyu: Chapter One' is no less than the one that Abhimanyu falls into in the 'Mahabharata'! Bringing a film to the theaters is like entering the battlefield for Nepali filmmakers.

What is the difference between taking a film made over years to the theatres, leading the target audience to the theatres through various difficult stages of screening, and going to the battlefield? On top of that, there was a Gen-G movement in the country 3 days before the screening of 'Abhimanyu'. Before that, the film had to face the situation created by the resistance on social media. Due to the Gen-G movement and the events behind it, 'Abhimanyu' did not reach the theatres on the scheduled date. This film, which had its screening date changed many times, has finally reached the theatres. The film has been in theatres since last Friday. Come on, let's discuss Abhimanyu in the film. The story of the film is taken forward by the character Abhimanyu (Kameshwor Chaurasia), who can reach the jail by shooting a dowry demander with a weapon. The story of this film is about the same Abhimanyu who gets out of jail and gets into a cycle of money and fake kidnapping. Who, while struggling to survive amidst his poverty, falls into the trap of a fake kidnapping in the greed of earning 50 million. But, the story of the film is not only about Abhimanyu. It is also the story of three female characters who come across him. Why do these three characters come across Abhimanyu? You have to watch the film to enjoy the mystery that 'Abhimanyu: Chapter One' unravels.

This 'crime'/'drama' genre film, made under the debut direction of Sushant Gautam, has captured the audience's attention with a story that captivates the audience. Director Gautam, who turned into a music composer and film director, has honestly narrated the story of the film. Raising a serious issue like dowry, director Gautam has told the story of revenge through the film. Where three ordinary women lead the story of the film. This film, which contains unusual stories of ordinary women, is also new in the sense that it shows strong, fearless, self-respecting women. Writing such a female character is also a strong aspect of ‘Abhimanyu: Chapter One’. Gautam’s practice is a strong reflection on the traditional style of portraying women as poor, helpless, and oppressed. In this sense, director Gautam has made a grand ‘entry’ into the Nepali film industry.

‘Abhimanyu: Chapter One’ does not repeat the faces that are used in other films. From Kameshwor Chaurasia, who has proven himself in acting, to talented artists like Laxmi Bardeva, Sarita Giri, and Gaumaya Gurung, these faces have ‘led’ the story of the film. Therefore, this practice started by Seven Seas is full of experiments in a special sense.

Laxmi Bardewa perfectly portrays the innocent nature, determination and confidence of the character of Leela on screen. Similarly, Kameshwor Chaurasia has brought to life the lovable characters like courage, fear and love within Abhimanyu. The acting of Sarita Giri and Gaumaya Gurung in the roles of the housewife and her daughter is also commendable. Prakash Dahal sometimes makes the audience laugh and sometimes makes them serious through the character of Gopal.

This film is not without its weaknesses. Some scenes in the film are stretched more than necessary. For example, when the secret of revenge is revealed in the film, the story is stretched a little more. How did the main characters of the film reach the decision to take revenge? What steps do they take after that? The long scenes used to explain those topics could have been tightened up in the editing. If these stretched scenes could have been tightened, the film would have kept the audience's attention 100%. 'Chapter One' of 'Abhimanyu' has lost its power where it seemed to need to hold the audience's attention more. Some scenes have been added just to make a sequel.

In particular, the story of this film is about a character who stands against the dowry system. Abhimanyu is intent on eliminating those who practice this system as much as possible. However, the story of the film does not revolve around why this system is wrong and the negative effects of its practice.

But, how does one 'action' of a character who stands against this system affect the lives of others? While the film focuses on the crisis brought about by this character in their lives, 'Abhimanyu' does not have a clear view on dowry. On the contrary, the film presents a superficial view on such a serious subject by portraying the very character who tries to discourage the dowry system as the villain.‍
