‘To act in films, to become a hero, to sing, to walk on programs’, this is how child singer Ashok Darji expressed his inner desire to become a hero on the program ‘Indreni’ in 2018. At that time, musician Tanka Budhathoki had already taken the responsibility of raising Ashok.
As soon as he heard Ashok's desire, Tank felt a kind of responsibility. Which father would not want to fulfill his son's wish! That's when Tank decided to make a film. Now Tank has made a film on Ashok's story titled 'Manabinako Dhan'. This film will be released nationwide from Kartik 21.
Where should he go now after reaching a kind of peak in music? Tank had this question in his mind for a long time. Tank composed many famous songs in the background music. While composing dozens of songs for the film, including 'Kali Timro Nazarile', 'Havaldar Suntali', 'Himmatwali', 'Rupai Mohini', Tank met the filmmaker. That experience also gave him the idea of making a film. That association with the filmmaker also gave Tank the courage to make a film.
Tank had already reached a certain audience/source through songs. The passion to reach a wide audience through the film also added to him. ‘Not just one category. My plan was to reach from children to the elderly through social service. That is why I made the film. Songs have a certain category. Some children like them, some old people like them. But if the film is a family film, the whole family can watch it.’ Tank spent 2 years making this film. In the meantime, he did not release many songs.
When Tank talked about making the film, Ashok initially did not think that it would become ‘Manbinako Dhan’. But when the work on the film became serious, he believed it. ‘At that time, I was excited that my dream was coming true. This is a huge project for me,’ says 15-year-old Ashok, ‘The story of the film is written by the audience, and I got to be the hero in it.’
Ashok has been an expert in singing songs since childhood. While walking on the streets singing songs, Ashok also had a desire to act. He is surprised when Tanka fulfilled that desire. That is why he is seen running around promoting the film. After filming, Ashok admits, ‘Acting is difficult.’
Ashok took an acting workshop at Kantipur Film Academy. After finishing the script, he took an acting class. He took a leave from school to act in the film. During the shooting, Ashok had a stomach problem. However, Ashok says that he acted even when he was sick. ‘Even though he was taking medicine, he shot,’ Ashok said with a smile.
Ashok is the same child singer who became very popular with the song ‘Manabinako Dhan’. Before singing this song, he used to sing on the streets. He was from Damak, Jhapa, and could not study due to his family’s financial condition. So he started singing on the streets and in hotels. While he was singing like this, Rupak Sapkota met Ashok on Magh 25, 2073, and went live on Facebook from Jhapa. In it, Ashok also spoke about the condition of his poor family. In the midst of that discussion, musician Budhathoki brought him to Kathmandu and recorded the song. He launched a campaign to build a house for Ashok in Jhapa. And he took the responsibility of keeping Ashok with him and teaching him. Meanwhile, Ashok’s popularity was fading. Others started going viral on YouTube.
Now, Ashok is rushing to give interviews to promote the film, which has suddenly gained popularity. In that sense, the film will show Ashok's childhood, not just the streets, but what is he doing in the present? Neeta says. As the discussion about the film continues, Tank is now again accused of using Ashok for his own interests and this film is also a result of that. However, Ashok himself refutes this accusation. 'If he wanted, he could have put AR in front to run the film. But he has given me priority. There is my photo on the big screen,' Ashok said, 'At home, he has treated me like his own son. AR and I sleep in the same bed. We wear the same clothes. There is nothing lacking.'
Ashok is currently studying in class 9. He says that he is enjoying this moment. 'I feel nervous when I look back at the moment of singing on the street at that time. I can't forget that moment. Now I am enjoying this moment,' said Ashok. '
' actress Neeta Dhungana, who acted in the film, says that 'Manabinako Dhan' was made with the aim of social service. 'This is a film made for a social cause. It is also the story of Tanka Budhathoki himself. The audience will learn a lot from the film. There is a lot of message in the film,' said Neeta. Neeta's character in the film is very mysterious. That is why Neeta has not got that much space in the trailer. 'I did this film because I liked the character of the film,' said Neeta. Neeta does not like to call the film a 'biopic' of Ashok. She says that the film covers Ashok's past and present. 'The film includes all of Ashok's abilities, qualities and flaws.' In fact, this is Ashok Darji's film,' Neeta said.
