Why are filmmakers protesting when 'Anjila' is nominated for Oscars?

An interesting incident happened in the film industry on Thursday. "Anjila" directed by Milan Chams was selected for the world prestigious film award "Oscar" from Nepal.

After the announcement of this decision of the film selection committee for Oscars, there has been strong opposition to the selection committee and the decision on social media.

Samundra Bhatt, the director of 'Gunyo Cholo: The Dress', criticized the committee for taking this kind of decision on the film Nehri through the social network Facebook. How appropriate is it to be the media coordinator of the film and sit in the jury? Questioning, Samudra has written on Facebook, 'How can you sit in America and give a decision without watching the movie? The surprising thing is that the decision is made by watching the movie in the hall or sitting in the room, still watching it on my laptop . Shameful .'

Although the story and content of 'Anjila' is good, she has requested various organizations for a fair investigation that her film 'Gunyo Cholo' is suitable for international representation.

Not only Samudra, 'Rajaganj' director Deepak Rauniar also considers it suspicious that the selection committee deliberately made such a decision without informing the filmmakers about the application . Questioning the committee on the social network Facebook, Rauniar has written a status saying that he and no one from the construction side are aware of the application and the committee has not reached him.

While Nepal is facing an unprecedented time, the Oscar committee of Nepal has quietly chosen Anjila to represent at the Academy Awards. In particular, the committee opens the application through email, social media or personally by reaching out to filmmakers. However, this year neither I nor the production team of my film came to know about it,' Deepak wrote,  'I just found out that the application was opened on August 11, with the final registration date of August 20. . That is only 9 days . I don't know, where was the news of the application . However, in such a short period of time, not informing about the application seems suspicious . This means that they did not want other films to apply.'

Now many filmmakers have raised questions about the committee and objected to this decision. Some have demanded that this committee should be abolished.

After all, when Chams's film is selected, why are other filmmakers opposing the Oscar selection committee? Was 'Gunyo Cholo' more appropriate than 'Anjila' to be recommended for Oscar's international feature film from Nepal? Only the audience, critics and selection committee will know that film . However, here the question has been raised about the members of the committee to select the film . On the other hand, everyone has noticed the information that the application has been opened.

Specially, previously the committee used to open applications through email, social media and news, with a time period of 20 to one month. Also from October 1 to September 30, i.e. within a year  The films that came to the public exhibition were able to indicate the participants  . Films with potential were encouraged by the committee to participate by informing the director of the film to the production team about the application. However, director Rauniyar claims that this time the information about the Oscar application did not reach him.

Samipyaraj Timalsina, the screenwriter who has previously become a member of the selection committee and the president of critics society, is of the opinion that it is wrong not to inform the related filmmakers about the application . I have nothing to say in the decision of the committee. They did what they thought was right. "If the filmmakers have said that I used to submit my film, but did not know about the application, then that is wrong," Timalsina said. If those filmmakers were not able to submit their film application without receiving notice, then the committee has become insensitive.' Stating that the time allotted for

applications is also very short, Samipya adds,  '9 days is a very short time .' He says that the decision of the Oscar committee has become controversial this year as the committee has become insensitive. That's why filmmakers are now raising their voices against their decisions and committee members. Samudra's group has raised questions on the members of the judging group.

Journalist Jeevan Parajuli is the 'Media Coordinator' of Chams' film 'Anjila'. The coordinator actively participates in the creation of various commentary from the promotional material of the film, to the delivery to the media . In Nepal, the coordinator plays the role of sending journalists to the press conference and coordinating the journalists with the film production side. However, Parajuli is in the selection committee. If the committee itself in the selection committee recommends 'Anjila' for the Oscars, there is no question of ethics!

'Being in power is a beautiful thing . However, it is not fair to sit in the committee recommending the film for which he is the media coordinator," says Nazir Hussain, the main actor of Gunyo Cholo. How can you take a decision by looking at the technical aspects of acting by watching a movie on a laptop? If filmmakers like Deepak Raunia do not get news of the application, it means that there is no transparency. I am happy even if the film goes to the Oscars, but I am also speaking to make the committee accountable.' Manjukumar Shrestha, Lokendra Parajuli 'Kapil', Gautam Dhimal, Jeevan Parajuli and Chiranjeevi Guragai are members of the committee for selecting

films. Its president is Bimal Paudel . Most of the members are now in America.

Director Samundra Guragai regrets taking a decision without watching her film . "My film has not even been released in America." She went to America 2 years ago and has not seen Anjila and Gunyo Cholo. By what criteria did Chiranjeevi evaluate my film,' she says, 'This is an insult to the Nepali film industry.' It's a matter of regret to vote for a movie you haven't seen.' Poudel, the chairman of the

committee, claims that they have made a fair assessment. We have a standard, we have decided within that. Especially it became 19/20 in two films . When choosing one of the two, we chose Anjila,' said Paudel about the controversy,  ''When the other film was chosen, there was a dispute that I should have gone too. . His film is also good . However, we have made a fair selection based on the criteria. According to President Paudel, only 2 films were applied for recommendation.
