The film was banned due to a controversial statement by Kamal Haasan. He expressed that Kannada language originated from Tamil. This is why the film has been banned in Karnataka. Kamal is being criticized after giving a speech at an event in Chennai for

Pro-Kannada groups protested in Karnataka after the statement went viral on social media. A complaint was also filed against Kamal Haasan. The film was banned in the state after Kamal Haasan refused to apologise.
Kamal Haasan wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce saying that his statement was misunderstood. He wrote, 'I am sad. Because the expression I gave at the audio launch of Thug Life was taken in a wrong sense . That statement Dr. My It was an expression of affection. My intention was to convey the message that we all belong to the same family, not to misrepresent the Kannada language in any way . There is no dispute about the rich tradition of the Kannada language .'
