The director has a wonderful formula to bind the audience in his film. The main character has a big dream, a goal. To reach the goal, the character has to climb many mountains of struggle. However, those mountains are not easy to climb. So whenever the characters struggle to climb such mountains to achieve their goals, the audience feels - Oh! This character would have reached the target easily.
Or we think, this character does not have to face obstacles and hardships when he climbs the mountain of sorrow, how often! But where is it as easy as you think? When the characters are struggling one after the other, a kind of emotion is conveyed in the audience - what will happen next? Will the main character achieve his goal? The audience gets attached to the film in search of an answer to this question. They connect with the characters, find themselves close to their dreams and struggles. So, while watching the movie, the main character clenches his fists while fighting with the goons. This is the magic of reading the story, the film will actually become a film!
In the film 'Anjila', director Milan Chams has forgotten to include this element of story reading. That's why 'Anjila', acted by the real player Anjila Tumbapo Subba and based on her story, does not capture the attention of the audience . The film turns more towards a family story than Angela's dream of becoming a footballer. When the story is more focused on the love story of her mother and father, the gambit of the two fathers than on Angela, why did the audience realize the dream of becoming a football player ? They forget that. In the
film, it is tried to show the struggle that Angela had to face to become a national player. However, leaving Angela's struggle for her dream, the director gives more importance to her mother's story. For a long time, the story turns only to the mother . How did the mother believe in the dream of director Angela ? He is trying to show his faith and hope towards his daughter through the character of Kausheela (Sirjana Subba). However, when the director gets lost in the stories of other characters, forgetting the main character who moves the story forward, 'Anjila' becomes less of a biopic and more of a family-oriented film. Like telling the story of a tree to the storyteller . But, what if you get stuck only in the roots and leaves while telling the story? Will that story tell the story of a tree that has stood firm in the wind for years ? Director Chams has done the same while making Angela's biopic .
The story focuses more on Angela's family background than on her biography. Even for about 45 minutes, when 'Anjila' turns to the story of the father of the family bringing a 'step' wife, the struggle of the player Angela becomes secondary . Angela's suffering and struggles are captured in the scene, but those struggles are not used in a way that makes you feel . For example, in this film, director Chams has shown Angela's struggle to come from Elam to Kathmandu, she has also shown her sorrow to stay in Kathmandu and become a player. However, the audience does not get to experience his sorrow and pain.
Angela comes to Kathmandu because of her mother . But, what kind of pain did Angela have to go through to reach Kathmandu to become a player? After that, the issue of what to do to prove yourself in APF is not clearly shown. When the story is advanced from the perspective of mother Kaushila, her struggles become subtle in front of her mother's grief. In order to break the story, Chams tried to show what kind of problems Angela faced in the family. A long time has been taken to show only how his birthday father and karma father have polygamy on the screen . Doing so distracts the audience from the main character's story. In particular, these scenes could have been shortened to the editing table. If the story had not glorified the bravery shown by the fathers when they brought a second wife, the story would have progressed towards the problems that Anjila had to face to become a footballer from the same father, the biopic 'Anjila' would not have been interesting . There are many such scenes in the film, which could have been cut. When prolonging the story of characters other than the main character, the audience does not get to join the struggle of the main character of the story . As a result, how could 'Anjila' tell/show Angela's story powerfully? It doesn't show .
As much as Angela's life was a struggle and adventure, the weak screenplay and direction make it a shadow . While the director advances the story from Kausheela's point of view rather than Angela's, 'Anjila' has surfaced the life and suffering of Angela, the captain of the Nepali women's national team. On top of that, the director has tried to force the audience to cry by stretching the relationship between mother and father. Especially Angela's grief is heart-wrenching, but because her struggles are not presented properly, 'Anjala' has been recorded as a weak film made on Captain Angela . These weaknesses of the
film have been covered to some extent by the acting of the actors. Actress Srijan Subba has again reminded us of her powerful performance in 'Dying Candle' through the role of Kausheela. Kaushila, who has been playing hard with karma while dealing with sorrows, has created the character's hope, trust and tolerance through her acting. The creation of a mother who is in tears or rejoicing in the achievements of her children has stood up for herself. Be it Bedna Rai in the role of Didi or Suraj as Tamu's boyfriend, these characters grab the audience's attention with their acting. While few films are being made in the
sports genre, making a film on the biography of a female athlete is the most positive part of director Chams . On top of that, making Angela herself act in her story is a novel use of charms. However, while making a biopic, not being able to bring the story of the respective character close to real life is a failed attempt on this genre.
