You come that way, instead of others...

An isolated voice in a crowd of easy-to-hum songs. A mix of folk and classical, this voice is a rhythm in itself, a melody. Sujan made friends with Sur, friendship with Tal! Sujan Chapagain is a singer born from the deep practice of melody and rhythm.

He doesn't make songs targeting YouTube trending or TikTok. He composes and sings his favorite songs. With the same element that should be in art, his song reaches YouTube-Tiktak trending for months. These songs slowly touch the heart and brain and the same taste remains on the tongue for months.

A month ago from Sujan's YouTube channel, 'Eklai Bhaeni' is a fresh example. This song of 'Sad Version' has been making the audience cry for a month. Aching hearts are empathized with the words and feelings of the song. Sujan affiliated 'Artmandu' is adopting a new style - shooting videos first and only writing songs. This style is followed in 'Eklai Bhaveni'.

The video of this song was first shot to show the breakup, long distance relationship. While watching this video, the lyricist Harak Saud wrote the lyrics of the song, Suzan added music to it and voiced it. It took 6 months to make the song. This song looks different from the song we are doing. It also took time to make the song. The song is sad, the feeling is also there, this is not just my story. The sweet elements of my unfulfilled love of Saigres are mixed,' Sujan remembers the time of making the song.

In this song, Sujan has presented the aching heart and pain through voice. That pain is expressed in the 'Highnote' drawn at the end of the song. For that, he collected those feelings even during the shooting.

  Expressed it during the

recording. Sujan used to think that the Nepali audience has not been able to taste 'Eastern Classical' music. He sang the song on that note to the voice with the thought of getting that taste. Reaching the pain, depth and tears of a broken heart brought heavenly joy.

Such a taste for classical music is Sujan's identity. Now the audience has found themselves in the spirit of this song, they have found it interrelated. What does a person experience when he is in extreme pain? Sujan has expressed that pain through his singing in Hainot. Sujan has proved himself versatile while singing this sad version song. Her voice is equally suited to songs from funky, romantic to sad versions,” praises lyricist Hark Susan.

Now Sujan is busy with two songs. One is 'alone', the other is 'velvet'. This song included in the movie 'Oonko Sweeter' is made in Kauda style. 'Makhmali' has been prepared by considering the cultural aspects of the film along with the story, situation and characters.

You come that way, instead of others...

This line from the song 'Makhmali Choli Mathi, Chhadke Layau Ghaleki- Rupai Sundar Meri Hajur Dhapakkai Baleki' is now highly preferred by the audience. Sujan is also handling music for Santosh Sen's film 'Balidan' along with 'Oonko Sweeter'.  Being the music director in a

film, Sujan has the experience of being the one responsible for handling the music of the characters and situations on the screen. Sujan says that it is a special pleasure to do the music of the film. It will be a different experience when you become the character on the screen and immerse yourself in the emotion of that character. There is a growing understanding that the music director should work in the film not only on

characters but also on the theme of the story, background music. Many stories can be told in a film within 3 hours. As the stories unfold, I work out how I can convey the justice the characters are seeking through music. It's fun working like this,' said Sujan with a laugh.

In two different genres of films, Sujan composed music in different ways. Culture, love and sentiments were captured in woolen sweaters, patriotic sentiments were filled in 'Balidan', and music that made people feel the revolution.

We become soft in woolen sweaters, we become dry in sacrifices. We prepared passionate songs when we had to protest against many things in sacrifice, revolution. The songs that came in the sacrifice are new to me too,' Sujan distinguishes between the two.

Sujan's music is behind the buzz of 'wool sweater'. Lyricist Harak Saud also wrote poetic words in the song of the film 'Fool' - 'Being without you, touching without touching'. Not only the lyrics of that song, but the singing of the chorus is beautifully blended. In it, the feelings of the female character, nature are expressed in beautiful words. In the opening voice of 'Phool' Sujan has caught the beginning, her strong singing is also reflected.

This talent of Sujan was seen/heard by the audience during the lockdown from 'Teenpate'. In this sense, the lockdown was not only lifted, it introduced some beautiful possibilities and talents. The director of 'Artmandu', Naveen Chauhan, immediately gauged the potential of Sujan's voice. Three days ago, he came to sing another song. I could see the potential of his voice right away," recalls the first collaboration with director Chauhan Sujan.

They wanted to show the story of the business, especially in 'Teenpate'. In the Nepali society where you have to go abroad, you have to go abroad, Artmandu made this video to show the possibilities in the country. The same thing was expressed in the words - 'Afaan Muskau Musukk, Juntara Tipi Kei Meen.'

'You can fulfill your dreams by sitting here. Work should be done wherever you live. By showing the business of Nepal, we created the concept of Tinpate with the thought of giving a message to the youth that there is a possibility in this country," Sujan said, "The name Tinpate was only named later. Hark Dai was writing the lyrics while creating the concept for the video. And after all the shooting of the video, we finished the rest of the song.'

It was not thought that 'Teenpate' would run widely. As director Chauhan wanted to tell a story through video, Sujan also wanted to give his musical language through music. But, the song went, Sujan went with the song. After 'Teenpate', Sujan was not only a hit among the audience, since then all the songs he has sung have been preferred. Looking back at all the song discussions, he considers himself lucky.

He is not in a rush to make music. He revels in the slow pace of music making. Even though the time before the release of the song was stressful, after the release there is a kind of reassurance. Before making it public, we look at the song from all sides, we think about it. Be it lyrics or music composition. I work as a composer on my own songs. But after being a composer, I am a singer. It is difficult to sing one's own composition due to the many elements that are composed at that time. You have to practice again,' says Sujan. Art needs time.'  When creating a

song, he fills the music as a musician, not taking the strain of singing. Mixing sweet elements as a musician. He has the experience of finding it difficult to sing himself while giving his voice. After the song is published, it seems to be very tiring. But we are happy when the response from the audience comes,” Sujan said.

You come that way, instead of others...

Sujan created 'Ghumighumi' because he wanted to listen to folk style. He enjoyed that style in Jhalakman Gandharva's songs. However, in the meantime, the lack of it continued. So he made a song mixing that style himself. The 17-minute long video of this song was already prepared. The strange thing is that when Sujan takes the same time on stage to perform this Dhima style song, the audience is concentrating on this song for the same amount of time.  After the

Australia performance, he even asked the audience if the song was too long. But when the audience was surprised and said, "17 minutes?", he got more energy. During the same performance in Australia, 'Phoolthunge Rani' was released. The lyrics, video and Sujan's singing made this song very popular.

Sujan thinks that Nepali music can be brought to the world market only through folk style. He is of the opinion that Nepali music can be brought to the world market by mixing some elements of the world market with Nepali soil and original music. It seems that the soul of our music should be folk. People reflect Nepali language and Nepaliness. If you mix other colors and juices into it, it will be done," he said, "The identity of our Nepali music is folk."

Sujan himself grew up listening to folk music. He used to sing hymns, mother used to sing too. He also used to sing folk songs in school. The feeling of 'can I do music' made Sujan to learn music. The court of Nepal Idol was taken twice. Now he has the energy to do music. When he reached SLC, he decided to learn music. I don't regret coming down the path of music so far. No regrets. Finally, something has to be done for Nepali music,' he said.

Sujan, who was studying classical music, was already attracted by songs that draw long notes. So now he is learning classical music. Practicing songs. Susan always has music on her mind.
