Madhav Sapkota, a member of the House of Representatives, has said that Nepal is going to build the Kodari highway with its own resources after China has not given the money promised for the upgradation of the Kodari highway even after 10 years.

Sapkota said on Wednesday at the program on 'Mainstreaming Border Voices in Foreign Policy Discourse' organized by the Center for Social Innovation and Foreign Policy (CESSIF), "60 percent of my first year's work has been spent on opening the Tatopani border. Our diplomacy is not strong." China has adopted a strict diplomatic style in the border area. I also worked to understand the commitment made by the Chinese government for the upgrading of Tatopani crossing in various agencies. But I found that every year the support was only renewed.'

In 2014, during the then President Ramvaran Yadav's visit to China, he said that China would give 140 million Chinese yuan, which is about 160 million Nepali rupees, for the upgrading of the Kodari highway.

Sapkota informed that he had approached the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure about support for the upgrading of the road, but they were unaware of it. He then went to the foreign division of the Ministry of Finance and understood.

'I went there and looked, but I didn't find anything new about that support except that it is renewed every year . Then I also discussed this issue at our embassy in Beijing. And, I also talked to the Chinese ambassador to Nepal, Chhan Song,'' he said, 'after no reply came from everyone, the budget has been allocated for the upgradation of this road on the initiative of the Nepalese government.' Now we don't need the help of China for the upgrading of this road.'

Sapkota informed that this year the budget has been allocated and the work has started on a multi-year basis. According to him, there are 6 landslides in the 26 km section of Kodari highway. The government of Nepal is going to do the improvement of landslides and other places. It is about to be done that Nepal can make it for about 3 billion 60 million rupees," he said . He said that if the multi-year contract is entered into, the road department estimates that the work will be completed in about 4 years.
