Karnali Province accounts for only about 4 percent of Nepal's total foreign employment. In the fiscal year 2081/82, Karnali Province accounted for 3.78 percent of the approvals for foreign employment, according to the Economic Activity Study of the Nepal Rastra Bank.

‘Most of the workers returning home from foreign employment in this province have re-obtained work permits. Some are found to be engaged in self-employment by utilizing the skills learned from foreign employment in the country,’ the report says. ‘Due to the lack of sufficient employment opportunities in the country, the number of Nepalis going abroad in search of reliable income is increasing every year.’

In the last fiscal year, 20,886 people from Karnali Province have obtained new work permits and 28,058 people have obtained re-obtained work permits. This is an increase of 16.06 percent and 11.87 percent compared to the previous year.

According to the report of the Nepal Living Standards Survey Fourth (2079/80), the poverty rate in Karnali Province is 26.69 percent. According to the report of the Nepal Labor Force Survey 2075/076, the unemployment rate in Karnali Province is 9.7 percent. According to the National Census, 2078, the economically active population (age 10 years or above) in Karnali Province is 71.65 percent.

In the fiscal year 2081/82, 7,156 people have received employment in Karnali Province through the Prime Minister's Employment Program. Of those deployed for employment, the highest number of 1,227 people have received employment in Kalikot, while the lowest number of 473 people have received employment in Mugu. The number of unemployed people registered in this province in that year was 28,353. The total number of projects is 950, the report states.
