Rajkumar Maharjan, director of the National Cyber Security Center, said that among the challenges of cyber security in Nepal, the tendency of hackers to deface government websites is increasing. In a program organized by Worldlink on the occasion of Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, Maharjan mentioned that the government website 'defacement' was seen as a major problem.
"There is a growing tendency to deface the website of government offices, in which the details or format of the website is changed," Maharjan said, "Denial of service, D-DoS attacks have also been seen in some systems." Ransomware attacks have been attempted in some of them.'
Maharjan's experience is that the biggest cyber challenge is 'phishing'. He disclosed that fake emails or messages will be sent targeting government employees and sensitive information will be collected. "False links are being sent from the Prime Minister's Office asking you to fill in circulars or information for budget preparation," Maharjan said, "It seems that they are trying to gain unauthorized access to the system through employees by keeping such phishing links." He said that the aim of the advisory is to spread awareness about cyber hygiene and safe internet usage. "We are also conducting cyber security training and hygiene programs for union, state and local level employees," he said.
He also said that an investigation is being conducted on cyber security issues in the system of the passport department and a committee has been formed for that purpose. He said that there are some 'monitoring tools' for monitoring and mitigating cyber attacks and using them regular monitoring of the systems hosted in the Government Data Center (GIDC) is being done . "As soon as our tools detect potentially undesirable activities, we investigate and prevent them," he said, "despite limited resources, we are doing our best."
