The Malaysian Immigration Department has arrested nine people, including three Nepalis, on charges of forging documents for migrant workers. The department arrested them during operations conducted at six locations in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday and Tuesday.

The arrested include three Nepalis, three Indians, one Bangladeshi, one Malaysian man and one Vietnamese woman (company director). Their ages range from 26 to 61 years.

According to Immigration Director-General Zakaria Shaaban, the gang had been active for seven years. He said the action was taken after a six-month investigation based on public information and media reports. The group is estimated to have made illegal income worth about 100 million Malaysian ringgit during this period. Altered immigration documents, including e-passes, security stickers and related slips, were seized from them. Similarly, 111 passports from various countries, 10 laptops, 6 mobile phones and about 4,000 ringgit in cash were seized.

Initial investigations suggest that the gang may have been illegally bringing foreign nationals into Malaysia. It has been revealed that 5,000 to 6,000 ringgit was being collected from each person.

The incident is being investigated under the Immigration Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act of 2001.

Among those arrested is 43-year-old Mahendra Jung Shahi. He has been named as the main accused in the gang. Shahi, who is also the former president of NRN Malaysia, was arrested and deported by Malaysia's special police force in 2016. He then returned to Malaysia.
