On November 12, 2025, 50-year-old Chhatra Bahadur Thapa, who had been living in his daughter's house in Fairfax, Virginia after receiving a green card (permanent residence certificate), murdered his daughter and wife.

The Fairfax County Police Department said that Chhatra Bahadur killed his 51-year-old wife Binda Thapa and 31-year-old Mamta Thapa with a 10-inch long sharp weapon (dao). Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis, addressing the incident, said that the accused involved in the murder, Chhatra Bahadur, was also killed in the police action.

'When the police arrived at the scene of the incident, they saw a dark-colored sharp weapon in the hand of the person involved in the murder. When they asked him to put the weapon on the ground, he refused, and he was shot and killed in the police action,' Fairfax Police Chief Davis said. Similarly, in the incident, Chhatra Bahadur also shot his son-in-law Santosh Kumar Basnet. Santosh Kumar, 35, was seriously injured after being shot. According to the police, the seriously injured Santosh is currently undergoing treatment. He was a resident of Biratnagar when he was in Nepal.

A one-year-old boy has survived the incident. The police have not yet released the details of the child. The boy is the son of Mamata and Santosh. According to the police, the child is in good condition and the police have handed him over to the child care center in a safe condition. Chhatra Bahadur, who lives in Rampur, Belka Municipality, Udayapur district, Nepal, was suffering from mental illness. It is understood that he has been taking mental illness medication for a long time.

Fairfax Police are searching for relatives after the incident. The Nepali Embassy in the capital, Washington, DC, has also expressed interest in the incident. This is the second incident in a Nepali family in the US in a year. Earlier, in August last year, a Nepali man shot and killed his wife and son in Dallas, Texas, and then committed suicide. Lalit Pradhan, 53, shot and killed his 37-year-old wife, Ranjana Shrestha, and his three-year-old son, Pranish Pradhan. Police said that after shooting his wife and son, Lalit also shot and killed himself using the same pistol.
