Two immigrants have died in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the top agency responsible for controlling and regulating immigration.
According to ICE, Victor Manuel Diaz, 36, a Nicaraguan citizen, and Heber Sanchez Dominguez, 34, a Mexican citizen, died in custody.
ICE confirmed that Victor Manuel, a Nicaraguan, died at Camp East Montana in El Paso, Texas, and Heber, a Mexican, died in a detention center in Georgia, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
Security guards found Victor unconscious in a detention center. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead during treatment. ICE said the probable cause of death was suicide after an initial investigation.
Victor was arrested on January 6 after being identified as an illegal immigrant. He entered the United States illegally at the Mexican border on March 26, 2024. The other illegal immigrant, Heber, who was found dead, had been in ICE custody for six days.
He was awaiting trial. ICE has launched a preliminary investigation into the cause of death. About 73,000 illegal immigrants are in ICE custody awaiting removal from the United States, the highest number ever.
