Malaysia has intensified its crackdown on undocumented workers. A total of 843 people were arrested in the Selayang Baru region of Malaysia. The arrests include 808 men and 35 women. Their ages range from 21 to 53 years old, Malaysian media reported.
Selangor Chief Minister and State Security Committee Chairman Amiruddin Shari said the arrest campaign was launched after foreign workers were found to be illegally entering the country and operating roadside businesses.
Those arrested are from Nepal, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Pakistan. The committee did not disclose the number of nationals of the countries to be arrested.
According to Amiruddin, similar campaigns had been launched against illegal immigrants in various places, including Seri Muda and the Selangor Wholesale Market.
Immigration said that most of those arrested were accused of not having identity documents, violating visa or pass conditions, overstaying, and using fake or invalid documents.
They have been taken to the Semenyih Immigration Depot for further investigation. It is said that the large number of foreign workers in Silayang Baru means that the fare is cheaper. According to Amiruddin, the process of identifying, arresting, filing cases and deporting illegal immigrants will be taken forward.
He has urged employers to adopt legal procedures when hiring foreign workers. "Using illegal channels can affect businesses and even pose a risk to national security," he said.
