Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has instructed employees to work in 'mission mode' to achieve the target of 1.6 trillion rupees by making extensive reforms in the country's revenue system.
Addressing the annual revenue review meeting held at the Ministry of Finance on Monday, he called on employees to move forward with clear targets, standards, and timelines.
On the occasion, Finance Minister Wagle mentioned that the concept of 'mission mode' has also been included in policies, programs, and the budget, and emphasized the need to establish the revenue administration as a successful example of this. Observing that the rhythm of revenue collection has been disrupted when looking at the country's total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and consumption trends, he stated that efforts must be made to control revenue leakage and expand the tax base.
He expressed concern that although the urban economy appears strong, revenue collection has not increased proportionally. Finance Minister Wagle instructed employees to step out of their 'comfort zone' and work. He said the tendency to become inactive after nearing the target must end. Clarifying that a policy of 'zero tolerance' towards corruption and irregularities will be adopted, he stated that employees who perform well will be rewarded and those who engage in misconduct will be punished.
He instructed that the relationship with taxpayers should be made more harmonious, and that policies should be adopted to motivate rather than intimidate. He said, 'A new plan will be introduced to honor large taxpayers and recognize their contributions. For tax compliance, taxpayers must be made responsible by giving them a specific timeframe.'
Stating that signs of improvement in revenue collection should be visible from the beginning of the current fiscal year's month of Shrawan, he urged employees to be proactive accordingly. He believed that if a positive trend in revenue collection could be established before the festival season, it would provide further encouragement in the days ahead.
Finance Minister Wagle said, 'My objective is always focused on the big picture. Our mission—1.6 trillion—is a clear target. Mission means that the target, the criteria for success or failure, and the timeline are all clear.'
The Finance Minister stated that the government is committed to solving the real problems of the private sector.
