With the aim of developing Nepal as a premier international destination for wellness tourism, major Himalayan trekking routes in Nepal, including the Annapurna Circuit, will be developed as 'Wellness Circuits'.
For this purpose, a memorandum of understanding was signed on Sunday between the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and 'Nepal in Business' (NIB), which is operated with the support of the British agency. According to the 'National Wellness Tourism Strategy (2016-2035)' issued by the Ministry of Tourism and the recently approved 'Action Plan (2026-2030)', the world-renowned Round Annapurna Trekking Circuit will be branded and packaged as a wellness tourism circuit in the first phase.
According to the agreement, special packages and travel itineraries will be prepared in the Annapurna region by incorporating wellness services such as yoga and meditation, spiritual and natural healing, Ayurveda and Sowa Rigpa (Himalayan traditional medicine), as well as spa and massage.
TAAN Chief Executive Officer Ramchandra Sedhai stated that this step would prove to be a milestone in giving a new dimension to Nepal’s traditional trekking tourism. Until now, Nepal’s trekking tourism had been mostly focused on sightseeing and physical adventure. "Now we are linking it to mental, spiritual, and physical health benefits," TAAN said in a statement. "There is great potential for our own Himalayan medical practices (Sowa Rigpa), Ayurveda, meditation, and natural healing in the Annapurna Circuit. Branding the Round Annapurna as a wellness circuit and preparing these packages will greatly help attract quality tourists who stay for longer periods."
According to Sedhai, based on the successful learning and model of the Annapurna Circuit, there are plans to gradually expand such wellness circuits to other Himalayan and hilly regions such as Limi Valley, Rara, Dolpa, Manaslu, Langtang, Helambu, Lapchi, Rolwaling, Khumbu, and Kanchenjunga.
As the government has already announced 2027 as 'Nepal Wellness Year', TAAN is preparing to begin promotion and marketing of this initiative in national and international markets from the start of 2027.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by TAAN President Sagar Pandey and NIB Team Leader Ratish Basnyat.
