The Nepal Electricity Authority exported electricity worth Rs 29.32 billion 47 million to India and Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2082/083. In the fiscal year 2081/082, it had exported electricity worth Rs 17.45 billion 87 million.
The Authority stated that while electricity exports have increased, imports are on a declining trend. In the fiscal year 2081/082, electricity worth Rs 12.92 billion 30 million was imported, whereas in the fiscal year 2082/083, only Rs 10.22 billion 74 million worth of electricity was imported.
The Nepal Electricity Authority exports surplus electricity generated during the monsoon season, after meeting domestic consumption, to India and Bangladesh. The electricity is sold at competitive rates on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in the 'Day Ahead' and 'Real Time Market' segments.
According to the medium-term power agreement, the Authority also sells electricity to the Indian company NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN). The electricity purchased from here by NVVN is supplied to the state of Haryana.
Electricity trade with India is conducted in Indian rupees. However, electricity is exported to Bangladesh in US dollars. As water flow in rivers and streams increases, production rises, enabling the Authority to export electricity during the monsoon season.
When the winter season begins and water flow in rivers and streams decreases, hydropower production drops, and to meet domestic demand, electricity is imported from India for a few months during winter.
