The 'Agriculture Food Systems Strengthening Project' has been formally launched in partnership with the Government of Nepal, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of China. The project aims to strengthen climate-resilient agriculture, rural livelihood improvement and food and nutrition security in hilly and mountainous areas for 24 months, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment has said.
The project, which is funded by China's Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, is expected to support capacity building of local institutions, climate-smart, agricultural nutrition improvement, digital innovation and inclusive rural development. The $4 billion fund established by China is operated with the aim of helping developing countries achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary expressed confidence that the project will play an important role in achieving the national goals of food security, rural prosperity and sustainable development. Chinese Ambassador Maoming Zhang expressed China's continued support for agricultural modernization and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. FAO Director Hua Yang expressed confidence that the project will become a successful model of South-South cooperation for Asia and other regions. The project, which will be implemented in Kavrepalanchok and Ilam, will provide farmers with technical advice, weather information, financial services, agricultural insurance and market information through digital agricultural extension services. The project will increase the participation of women, youth and marginalized communities, enhance the capacity of local institutions and strengthen climate-adaptation capacity. The collaboration is expected to support the long-term transformation of agriculture and food systems under local leadership by exchanging international technical knowledge and experience.
