There has been significant progress in sowing across the country in the last five days. The sowing rate across the country, which was 49 percent as of 26 Ashad, has increased by 20 percent as of 1 Shrawan, according to the Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. Accordingly, 69.77 percent sowing has been completed across the country so far. According to the department, 95,85,074 hectares have been sown as of 1 Shrawan.
Provincially, the highest sowing has been done in Sudurpaschim. 90.67 percent sowing has been completed in this province. This is followed by 80.65 percent sowing in Lumbini, 78.36 percent in Gandaki, 77.33 percent in Bagmati, 77.05 percent in Karnali, and 57.93 percent in Madhesh. According to the department, 54.86 percent sowing has been completed in Koshi.
The department's data shows that sowing has been completed on 151,691 hectares out of 276,386 hectares in Koshi, 221,546 hectares out of 382,433 hectares in Madhesh, and 88,557 hectares out of 114,524 hectares in Bagmati. Sowing has been completed on 73,349 hectares out of 93,606 hectares in Gandaki, 243,42 hectares out of 313,372 hectares in Lumbini, 33,353 hectares out of 43,290 hectares in Karnali, and 147,100 hectares out of 162,220 hectares in Sudurpaschim.
Last year, 72.14 percent of sowing was completed by 4th of July. Compared to previous years, this year the monsoon arrived 6 days later than average. Although the monsoon usually arrives in Nepal on June 13, it was estimated that sowing would not be possible on time this year as it arrived only on June 19. However, the data shows that sowing is taking place this year as well, compared to last year.
Last year, 95.54 percent sowing was done by Bhadra 7. Rajendra Koirala, Deputy Director General of the Department of Agriculture, said that the sowing percentage has increased in Madhesh due to the rains that have occurred in the last one week. ‘Planting depends on the farmers’ preparation and natural conditions. Mahesh Acharya, Chief of the Agricultural Development Office, Salyan, said that despite the lack of timely rain, 80 percent of sowing has been completed across the district.
Farmer Dhan Bahadur Khatri of Bardiya Badhaiyatal-2 said that the planting was started by irrigating from pumps due to insufficient monsoon rains. He said that although the planting was done before 15 Ashad last year, it was delayed this year. Kamala Adhikari, head of the Bardiya Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, said that this year, 100 percent of the paddy will be planted in about a week. ‘90 percent of the planting has been done in Bardiya,’ she said, ‘100 percent planting can be completed within a week.’
