Nepal's tourism sector has seen an encouraging improvement in 2025, overcoming the recession caused by the Corona pandemic. According to the 'Nepal Tourism Statistics-2025' released by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, there has been an increase in both the number of tourists entering Nepal and the length of stay compared to the previous year. According to the data, a total of 1.162 million foreign tourists visited Nepal in 2025. This is an increase of 1.29 percent compared to the previous year, 2024. That year, 1.147 million 548 tourists entered.
The data also shows that the length of stay of tourists in Nepal has also changed along with the number of arrivals. The average stay in 2024 was 13.3 days, but it has increased to 16.34 days in 2025. Despite the increase in the length of stay, the per capita daily expenditure of tourists has declined slightly. The average daily expenditure per tourist has decreased from US$40.84 in 2024 to US$33.08 in 2025. This shows that even though tourists want to stay for a long time, their spending capacity or the appropriate destination/medium for spending has decreased.
Although the daily expenditure of tourists has decreased, the country's total foreign exchange earnings have increased due to the longer stay. In 2024, the tourism sector generated income of Rs 83.394 billion, which increased by 4.77 percent to Rs 87.371 billion in 2025.
The largest share of tourists coming to Nepal is from neighboring India. Among the major countries, India has 293,000, America 113,000, China 96,000, Britain 59,000, Bangladesh 58,000 and Australia 50,000. According to the data, 60.2 percent of the total tourists come to Nepal for sightseeing and entertainment. Similarly, 14.4 percent came to Nepal for pilgrimage, 14.2 percent for trekking and mountaineering, and the remaining 11.2 percent for other miscellaneous purposes.
Annapurna Conservation Area is the first choice of tourists for visiting national parks and conservation areas. In 2025 alone, 313,549 foreign tourists visited. Chitwan National Park, which is in second place, received 103,944 tourists, and Sagarmatha National Park received 47,524 tourists.
The total number of tourists visiting Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, last year reached 1,113,696. Of these, 729,910 were domestic tourists and 369,817 were Indian tourists.
According to the ministry's report, among the controlled areas designated by the government as requiring permission, the Gorkha Manaslu region has become the main attraction for trekkers. In 2025, 14,720 people trekked in the Manaslu region. This was followed by 4,178 in Upper Mustang and 2,513 in the Chum Valley of Gorkha. It is seen that a large number of tourists trek in controlled areas, especially in October and April.
A large number of tourists coming to Nepal still use air routes. Of the total arrivals in 2025, 87.39 percent (1,015,735) tourists entered Nepal by air and 12.61 percent (1,46,630) tourists entered Nepal by land.
