The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has taken action after it found that food containing inedible ingredients was being sold at Corner Point Restaurant and Bar on New Road and Biryani King on Boudha during an inspection.

After finding expired food ingredients, use of artificial food colors and serious deficiencies in food safety during the inspection, two businessmen have been fined, ordered to destroy the inedible ingredients and taken action.

On Ashad 19, a joint team including the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection conducted an inspection at Corner Point Restaurant and Bar on New Road. During the inspection, it was found that expired fruit syrup was being used in the restaurant, a dead spider was found in the oil used to make pizza base, and food items were stored in a disorderly manner in the refrigerator.

During the inspection, the Total Polar Material (TPM) of the oil used was measured at 22 percent, and the hygiene condition was stated to be normal. TPM is an indicator to measure the condition of oil that has been used repeatedly. The department has stated that the quality of oil decreases as its quantity increases. The department has stated that it has immediately destroyed two bottles of 'Swas' brand fruit syrup that were expired and did not have complete label details.

The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has fined the restaurant Rs 201,000 as per the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS. It has also directed it to rectify all the deficiencies within 3 days and appear before the department with evidence.

Earlier on 18 Ashad, the department had inspected Biryani King in Bouddha, Kathmandu, through a joint team with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, based on a complaint filed by a consumer. During the inspection, it was found that artificial food coloring was used indiscriminately in the biryani. Similarly, 2 packets of expired chowmein and 2 packets of chaat masala were also found. The department has stated that it has destroyed 5 kilograms of biryani with expired ingredients and artificial coloring. In addition, entrepreneurs have been instructed not to use artificial colors in food production in the coming days.

The department has instructed both businesses to immediately correct the weaknesses seen and to appear before the concerned body with the necessary documents. The department has stated that it will continue regular and emergency monitoring of activities that adversely affect the health of consumers in accordance with the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081.

Department spokesperson Dr. Balkumari Sharma said that 2/3 teams are continuing to monitor the market daily. She said that 8 offices in 7 provinces under the department and 22 division offices in different districts are also monitoring the market. Apart from the department, local governments and district administration offices also monitor the market.
